I think the evidence points to municipal internet being far better managed than transit infrastructure. Not all government projects are doomed to failure and IMO we should learn more from those that are because the government having no capa

I broadly agree that a lot of drivers would accept the risk, but there is reasonable concern for everyone outside the vehicle, which translates to a reasonable concern about regulation. And unless progress here has stalled, waiting a few mo

We should just ban cars in the parts of NYC where this a concern and give the streets back to pedestrians.

Signs on platforms in NYC are just intentionally obtuse. All the signs on the platforms themselves reference the end of the line bu street name, which nobody knows. Some places name a borough, which is what everyone actually wants to know,

I think we should be expanding the H1-B program, but it is already oversubscribed and if this can reduce applications to the point where the lottery is not needed or is much more certain, I think that would be an improvement.

To be a bit more cynical it seems to be saying something closer to "we want to look upstanding, so please go do the work for us because we couldn't diversify our own firm"

As a counterpoint, my ML team regularly dumps data into Google Sheets for review / note taking, and we build dashboards using some SQL dashboarding tools. I've cobbled together email sign up forms for some non-technical side proje

The cyber threat from China is very real, but cyber capability is super cheap. A one-off capability is going to run in the low single digit millions. You wouldn't endanger an asset currently worth tens of billions and growing for that.

One random note I heard on a podcast about child development is that children do not improve their language skills by watching tv or educational material and that they need feedback to learn. Contrast that with language models which do noth

Not to downplay tests, but this would be caught by a typing system if all access to DB fields was through an ORM such that all access could be type checked. Not to say that everyone should use an ORM, but this would be a very simple propert

Most of the cost in pharma trials is not due to safety testing, it is in testing whether it is effective and whether it is better than the competition. I'm not really involved in pharma, but there seems to be a decent argument for sell

I don't think this comparison holds up. In software, the reason to release something early is because it is hard to tell if there is demand for what you have built and getting feedback from the market is vital. In pharma, I think the s

Obviously 5 > 3, and hopefully Android/Pixel keeps making progress, but I don't know that these numbers are directly comparable since Android does less through OS updates, and iOS updates tend to not perform great on old phones

I think hits the nail on the head, the shows were just boring. It also plays into my hypothesis that writers in Hollywood are very underappreciated, because I don't know how else we get so much poorly written garbage, given the budgets

"AI Labs" tend to publish papers more than they actually work on real projects, so I wouldn't assume shutting down an AI lab implies suspending the self-driving car project.

We're not trying to make this easy :) We need some computer vision code to search the display buffer itself to find out where the terminal is and figuring out where to draw the pixels!

We need to go deeper. This needs to be a kernel module that draws these pixels directly to the display buffer.

Lol. The reason costs are so high is because there is severe political pressure to keep them that way from contractors, unions, etc, and we're rich enough to afford it. For context, we have 4 million miles of road in the US. So even wi
