Agreed. It's not that these weren't legitimate business expenses but if you are trying to start a company on a shoe-string budget you should really spend considerable time trying to get the best deal possible and limit all expenses to the

Are there really that many of these "brogrammer" start ups around? I find it hard to believe that they plague the culture as much as some articles have you believe. At least, it's nothing compared to actual college, where bros own the soc

I would agree with you that "naming and shaming" at this point is not in his best interest, however there is no question his employer should pay him in an ideal world.

I agree. I think a business person would either tell his boss or find a way to start a business associated with automating similar data entry. A person who doesn't say anything and tries to "get theirs in the short run" will eventually lo

That's one thing thing you can count on on HN: brutal honesty! BTW I think this is a killer idea, though I am more in the bachelor stage.... maybe we need a social network for guys on the prowl!

I think it's a fine idea. In my experience the start up mindset is something some people have and is not necessarily tied to a particular idea. Also, programmers aren't usually the best at networking. So why not let YC do it for them and

This is absolutely true. People are prone to think that if you start a company and it is "for the wrong reasons," three years later you will be bankrupt and want to kill yourself. Likely, if you start a company for the wrong reasons, you w

How can there be a "last great American genius." Assuming genius is a statistical percentage of the population born every year, wouldn't there be just as many if not more currently than in the past?

I admittedly have a poor understanding of corporate taxation and offshore avoidance, but this example makes sense to me. Though government is not a family, and it is safe to say all parties will act selfishly. This may further his argumen

This sounds like MBA advice and is good, general business practice, however highly intelligent people capable of extraordinary things often do not act in accordance with these rules (likely because they are PHDs and not MBA students). I im

Agree. If you've ever seen Curb your Enthusiasm Larry David demonstrates this perfectly. He just always pushes it too far. Being weird is actually totally acceptable if you are confident and respond to basic social cues.

I think LaTeX is built for perfectionist, pedantic academics. That is not to say I don't secretly love it, but after spending hours battling the program trying to get it to look right, I usually end up asking myself what's the point?

I completely agree. I would go so far as to say that for many engineers, programming-at least the type they do for work-is not their first passion, but is an activity they enjoy to some degree and it pays well. Hopefully this will allow t

My issue with politics is the lack of control. If I am engineering a pet project or even a module for work, I have a large degree of control over its construction. With politics, it seems like you fight and fight and nothing ever changes-a

Like all celebrities, Facebook is a bit insecure and likely overly paranoid about losing its choke hold on social/sharing. Obviously this was only a factor, but probably is the factor that pushed Instagram's value over the top.
