I've got no experience with this, but isn't HTML5 video quite hard to do well? I hear a number of problems with YouTube's HTML5 player, whereas the Flash player works extremely well. I imagine that DRM is an issue, but perfor

I had a membership when I was a student, and I did get in contact with them once regarding my universities lack of a Data Structures and Algorithms class for Computer Science. To my knowledge, nothing came from it, which disappointed me as

Absolutely, and people shouldn't be overly negative towards another persons work. Decent manners towards other human beings aside, my main point is that a lot of the negative criticism we see towards released code and tools on communit

While I usually agree with comments like these, I think it is key to point out that respect is earned, and that just because some code has been released it doesn't mean that we should be grateful for it being bestowed upon us. Nowadays

Out of interest, did you get the job through a recruiter? This is quite common for companies that hire through recruiters. I've worked in a few places where people have been sacked a week or two into the job because things aren't

Back when I graduated a part of me really wanted to apply to Google. I think it's a great company, I love the idea of working with so many great employees of many disciplines, and I was even excited about the interview process. However

This was the feeling I had when I had played with the recent versions of WP. It felt like a fantastic OS, and the hardware ran it brilliantly. My own personal showstopper isn't a fault with the OS, but with how the phones look. Nokia j

Actually, in my experience, I'd say that while .NET is used in enterprise, it's mostly used by small businesses. My experience is mainly within .NET based CMS's, and I've worked for a few agencies and startups that build

For me, the best branching model is one that works well for you. In my mind, version control tools like git and Mercurial are super flexible by their nature. As a result, looking for the "one true model" is a fruitless endeavour.

Didn't you used to post on the SitePoint forums a few years ago? I remember someone showing off a review plugin for WordPress on there. Was that you by any chance?

The same goes for me! My first job was at a startup that used ASP.NET with C# (with PHP for micro-sites). From there, I've worked at agencies where I've built both large sites and small sites using ASP.NET and C#. The whole notion

You can also make the large Google screenshot smaller if you use the Image Zoom plugin (or know how to change it using Firebug or the default dev tools). I believe that is what's causing the layout to freak out.

I think being great at something isn't really something that you can teach. I also think that very few people hit a brick wall and stop being able to learn how to be an exceptional programmer. If you ask people that are REALLY good at

I'd like to say no, but in reality everyone has a price. I imagine it'll vary, based on your current situation, and just how bad the job could be. I imagine a lot of people take on jobs they know they'll hate because the mone

For someone with almost five years of professional experience as a Web Developer I think I'm paid a low salary in the UK. I reckon I'm paid well at my company, but I believe I could get better elsewhere. It would probably be 20-25

I've noticed this, oddly, while my workplace is transitioning to git from Mercurial. A lot of developers using .NET tend to go for Mercurial because a while back it felt a lot nicer to use on Windows. It's why I always preferred u

It's a shame that the "Shit HN Says" Twitter account is dead. This would be a dead cert to end up on there. In all seriousness, from a highly abstracted view, Dropbox isn't all that complicated. However, the same things

I spent a ton of my childhood building HTML table layouts, especially forum skins. Maybe it's because I'm now spoiled by lovely CSS and established web standards, but the thought of coding any HTML email up makes me sick.

One of my big reasons for wanting to pick up Python was to get me out of developing on Windows. As much as people love to tout Mono, it's simply not desirable for any .NET shop. My biggest worry was if I was offered a job at a great co

This is my reservation too. As a .NET developer you can often feel alienated because of the platform you build on. About a year ago, I picked up Python because I wanted to build a site using Django. I decided to fire up my Ubuntu VM, and wo
