You may be right about that, but again what happens in response to the gulf situation is orthogonal to this entire thread of discussion. BP has been racking up tens of millions in fines over the years, but they've been spending those mil

That liability cap does apply to negligence. It applies to any civil suits. However, it does not apply to criminal charges, and the DoJ has intimated that it may pursue criminal charges against someone in this. Even if the liability cap

A Libertarian would probably point out that regulation played a significant role in this mess. The $75m liability cap gave BP incentive to continually act as recklessly as they did over the years. $75m is a joke compared to getting a new,

The relief well they're drilling should resolve the issue sometime in August. Everything else they're trying in the meantime are just stop gap measures to mitigate the flow until the relief well is finished.

From what I've read, that option isn't viable in the gulf, due to the composition of the ocean floor there. It would be more likely to open new breaches into the same bore hole than seal the leak.

Considering how many traditional companies commonly offer relocation assistance and how often we read about peoples' experience flying cross-country to interview with tech companies like Microsoft and Google, it was hard to take this articl

You get over that. I was similarly terrified of mine at first, but have come to realize that it's very resilient. It was the same with the iPhone at first too, but now I kick it around like any other phone (and it's fine).

Would you willingly give up your iPhone for whatever you used before though? The neat factor definitely wears off these things, but their game-changing utility remains.

It's a valid and worthwhile point to make. Outside of the Microsoft development community, it's very common for people to assume you must buy an expensive Microsoft product to develop on the platform (maybe because that was true at one poin

Almost all Facebook users use the Facebook.com web interface, while the majority of Twitter users use a third party client or SMS. Comparing them by search activity isn't reasonable.

Keep in mind that Buffett also invested in Moody's, who made this mess possible by rating junk CDOs AAA. I agree that he's generally an ethical guy, but his investment doesn't automatically confer absolvement.

What stats package do you use that gives you a "time spent on site" that's accurate for a single or final pageview (honest question)? Most of them take a very pessimistic view. I believe Google Analytics counts a single pageview visitor as

I believe Clicky only continues pinging for 10 or 20 minutes after a page loads (not sure which; they've changed it up a bit since introducing the pinging). That's a great idea about detecting whether or not the tab is actually active. I do

Since I'm not selling anything, a single pageview can easily be a success case for me. If Google refers someone to my site and a single page (and/or its comments) answers their question, I see that as a win. That's where most stats packag

There are myriad ASP.NET based websites that rank well. Look at the markup on Guthrie's or Hanselman's blog. Both have WebForms artifacts like ViewState, __doPostBack, and generated IDs, but rank well. WebForms definitely encourages slopp

Every time I've conducted informal polls of my readers, the results have been about 50/50 on this topic. It's not as cut and dried as the article suggests. Many users even prefer same-domain links to open in a new window automatically.

You should combine your JavaScript. Also, the querystring timestamps break caching in some proxies. It's a bit of a pain, but it's best to integrate the timestamp into the filename.

It's a necessity if some of your site's pages aren't very tall and you use a centered layout. Pages shifting back and forth horizontally when navigating between short and long pages is annoyingly jarring.
