I'd have to dig a little bit for a source to back this up, but I would guess that the odds of succeeding are much higher if you have funding than if you don't. I think the author is critiquing the fact that these companies get money at all,

Same here. Just got a house and I'm looking for a way to automate the whole thing, but there's a pretty shockingly small amount of usable hardware out there for a reasonable price. Here's hoping this platform is everything that hackers like

While you raise a good point about the difficulty of what they are attempting, I think it is worth noting that they might be attempting to get an MVP out there to gauge market viability. If this campaign is successful (which it obviously ha

I'm starting to grow a little bit numb toward all the revolutionary materials science papers that I've seen since starting grad school. I don't mean to malign the work done here, but if I had a dollar for every paper I've read that claimed

The great thing about the issues that you raise here is that they can be impacted by voting for city council members who are more supportive of startups. I'm not familiar with city politics in Mountain View, but maybe if the community got b

I'm pretty shocked that HN wouldn't be in favor of any and all efforts to advance the space race. Everyone (deservedly) showers praise on Elon Musk whenever SpaceX has a successful launch, but when India wants to push the envelope the respo

I guess you could always disable the IR receiver via a pretty quick hardware or software hack once you got your badge if that was a concern.

I've seen people use IR to re-program Arduino boards before, and I think it would be pretty cool if someone wrote a self-replicating program that could be passed on just by standing in front of another attendee for the length of a normal sh

Yeah, probably a few gyroscopes/accelerometers. I would guess that it is a beefed up version of something like this: http://blog.makezine.com/2012/03/28/an-inexpensive-self-bala... I like their tiny kickstand as a solution for keeping the

I'm excited to see some hardware concepts coming out of YC in the past couple of years. I think that the lean startup model is starting to be much more viable (vs 5 years ago) in the hardware space thanks to low cost prototyping electronics

Same here. I'm wondering if this is maybe an incomplete list. There have to be more than three failed open source hardware projects out there.

I'm just a non-computer scientist who mainly codes in Python and Matlab, but a lot of these suggestions (making a number a vairable if it is used more than once, etc) seem like normal coding practices to me. Do very many coding tutorials le

Wouldn't it be much cheaper to offer a life insurance policy for each employee that would pay out enough to generate this much income at a relevantly low interest rate? Or is that what they are actually doing and just packaging it different

I wonder how much plane size impacts the efficiency of system, particularly in the case of the random boarding process? I flew on Southwest and American Eagle last week and thought about this for a while. On Southwest people were able to ch

Personally I think there is a large amount of value in wrestling with an idea until you are completely stuck on it and then talking to another engineer about it for a couple of minutes. Maybe I'm just an external processor, but some of the
