I'm actually reading his Black Hole War book right now and he does a great job of explaining things conceptually.

I played the same way. Well, I took a motorcycle because the traffic was always way too slow. Sometimes I'd stop to Judge Dredd some random Crims if it was on the way. The world looked pretty, but the traffic and pedestrian AI was just

The open world was an albatross they should have ditched in favor of the main quest; the campaign is cinematic and awesome, the combat is bomb, but the world is... well, you traverse it, and that's about it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to be nostalgic for those things though. We had a period where animation and game production was democratized, where the promise of computing was actually realized. And what did we switch to, but co

I would consider that wonderful. I'm no huge Microsoft fan, but it's very nice that I can run 90s and 2000s programs on my current windows box. Though I hear we're losing Win32...

Yes, absolutely. Memory is cheap, software is valuable, forcing everyone to churn constantly to satisfy some sort of aesthetic is a massive waste of resources.

I like the physical book. Ebook readers just aren't large enough to accommodate the size that they print these books in, and I'd rather use my screen for the code I'm editing without needing to tab back to the book.

It's funny that your first thought is "why would I buy this, I basically already have it." I think a much more common reaction people have to titles is "why would I buy this, it isn't like what I already have."

Package managers will produce an SBOM for you, the tough part is keeping track of licenses and CVEs. TideLift and BlackDuck (now called something else) work just fine as third party solutions you can run on your self-hosted stuff though.
