My guess would be the latter. Ingenuity was primarily a technology demonstration whose failure wouldn't impact Perseverance's main objectives, so the risk was probably acceptable. As for launching several cheap, redundant probes -

Interesting blog post, based on an interesting paper. For a bit more background, there's been a couple of posts on the "minimal cell" concept on Derek Lowe's venerable In the Pipeline blog. This 2016 post [1] talks about

Much less common than when smoking was allowed on aircraft, thankfully. This article [1] about Air Canada flight 797, back in 1983, gives a good impression of how fires in aircraft bathrooms were much more common back then, which led to pil

I could definitely imagine SpaceX launching another company's station, like what Axiom has in mind. I don't know if SpaceX would want to build a crewed orbital station themselves and operate it; I don't think they want to get

To be fair to reporters, Axiom does both; their first mission had three space tourists as passengers, their second mission had one space tourist and two passengers from the Saudi government (a military pilot and a biomedical researcher).

Ars Technica's article [1] has more background. The commander is a former NASA astronaut with a lot of experience who now works for Axiom; the three passengers are military officers whose governments have contracted with Axiom. [1] ht

I'm not sure if the credential lists that HIBP pulls from always have the associated service/site. Looking up one of my emails, there's a mix of data breaches of specific sites (which are shown) and big lists of credentials,

There are some libraries that add the kind of utility functions you're talking about; I'm fond of samber/lo [1] myself. I don't know how widely used they are, though. [1] https://pkg.go.dev/github.com

Definitely agreed that it's not a perfect solution, just that it's better than blindly using `any`. Using type assertions to get around it defeats the point, though, and it is frustrating when people do that.

The Typescript team has been pushing the use of `unknown` instead of `any` for typing data at the boundaries of your app; how much of that has shown up in the ecosystem? EDIT: I definitely agree with your general point, for the record.
