SMR Hard Drives have very different rules about how you should access them vs conventional hard drives or SSDs. I wonder how much optimizing for SMR drives (Big sequential writes) would also optimize for other drive types.

I'm a big fan of the Windows XP Royale theme (from Media Center Edition). Like regular XP, but glossier and shinier.

Headline says "Windows APIs are becoming Linux kernel features", but only provides two actual examples? It lists NTSYNC, and waiting on multiple events at once.

Is the tooling really centralized around Github? I use TortoiseGit, and that doesn't seem to care which service you are using. Although it does seem to have special authentication features specifically made to help you log in to Gith

The memory is organized differently, where VGA has to use 4 memory chips and spread a byte of memory among them, while MCGA just keeps it simple and uses one byte of memory per pixel.

The thing that really surprised me is how rare actual IBM MCGA cards were, yet the MCGA-compatible VGA mode was so widely used.

This is where something like "const bool isAdmin = true, sendWelcomeEmail = false" helps. Now your literal values aren't in the function call arguments anymore, but instead their meaning is, you just need to look elsewhere (

It's that RICH header that you need to exclude. I just tested my copy of MSVC 2019, and `/emittoolversioninfo:no` will exclude the RICH header from the binary. Supposedly also works in MSVC 2022. The build timestamps in the PE h

No, it's not how the world works. The warning about "goto" in C is about memory leaks due to misusing malloc/free. The issue with TI-Basic is about the interpreter using a stack for if/else/end blocks. In nor

The Basic was SO BAD that I had to learn Z80 assembly to make anything good. Really. No sane Basic should leak stack memory just because you exited an "If-Then" block without reaching the corresponding "End". Yes that&

Game Boy Color has a secret video mode where you can directly drive the LCD from the cartridge slot. CPU completely halts, so you can't use the joypad or sound anymore. https://gbdev.gg8.se/wiki/articles/Gameb

Guard pages are for the process that creates them, they're not for the other processes that try to read the memory.

Reading arbitrary process memory can be done as a standard user. No admin needed. Any Win32 program can do it. You just can't access the memory from processes that are admin-level.

I think you can flash a TI83 Plus ROM to a TI73 by using an exploit? One exploit was that flashing an OS writes all the ROM, then checks the signature afterwards, then erases it if it fails. Pull batteries at the correct time and...
