And what I'm saying is that if every tower in the forest was in a similar state of maintenance, or had a flamethrower pointing off the side that went off every week, the number of deaths would be lower.

I do not believe that fires are being started at anywhere near the maximal rate allowed by forest conditions. I DO believe that having vastly more fires started (on the order of 100x or more) would reduce the overall deaths and ecologic

Sure, but I'd put money on the majority of people speeding doing so intentionally, and while determining whether lack of maintenance was an accident isn't trivial (and depends on the definition of 'intentional') even in

And to me, the fact that the fires would happen for other reasons is the most important thing in the case . Blame should fall on the people with the power to prevent an accident from happening, and PG&E did not have that power. (They i

You're right - driving too fast is an active choice, while lack of maintenance is an accident.

But a lot of the causes of car accidents ARE systemic! "driving while 80 years old" "driving while on 4 hours of sleep in the past 72" "driving with the brake warning light on" I'd count all of the above a

So, corollary. Should we completely rework the process for certifying cars (safety testing) and drivers (drivers licenses, training) due to the FAR more than 346 roadway deaths last year? Adding just a few lessons from Aviation - things lik

I've got a bit of a problem with articles like this one. I'll try and illustrate it with an analogy: Imagine some asshole puts an incendiary in an orphanage, and rigs it to go off when a nearby speed trap detects someone going mor

I think the issues with reprocessing low-level nuclear waste (which is what I think this would be) would be more political and economic than practical. But if we truly were running out of rare earths? Both of those would go away. That being

I propose that 99.9% of the rare earths have not undergone nuclear changes, and so could be separated out. If there are +neutron changes that create unstable isotopes, that would be hard - but ones that resulted in fast beta decay or fissio

On the other hand, if you're an African American doing a business deal in China, it is also almost certainly the best example, and might genuinely be the most valuable thing that you take away from that class. Specifically, "som

There's ~4 billion tons of uranium dissolved in seawater, too. Which is enough for a millenia or three - if we used it for all of our power needs.

That's still not the same thing, though. If, among the 1% of African Americans pulled over, 10% have drugs, while among the 0.5% of White Americans pulled over 20% have drugs, it doesn't actually say much about the overall rates o
