Imho people are just expressing their disagreement. I know downvote is not meant for that, but I think HN is to blame here. If you have two arrows, one up and one down, why is up for agreement while down is not for disagreement, but for &qu

That is great insight in how many software corporations prioritize tasks. However, rare bugs are often indicators of bigger problems, so it pays to at least investigate them. Not because of 0.1% of affected users, but because it might make

Hey there, it seems I am late to the party (and it didn't really take off this time)... Nevertheless, sounds like a good mission to me... Even if you don't succeed at every subtask, you could still make a difference. Do you plan t

There is no monopoly in e-mail though. That's an important distinction.

I don't think this the reason - there were archeological expeditions under Societ Union, and it's been 25 years. Was there some technological breakthrough, or some other political change lately?

Can't speak for gp, but we're using supervisor inside Docker containers as lightweight init process. In our case the main advantage of Docker containers is ease of installation and consistent environment - so we don't always

No. Apps can abuse waking up the phone all they want (and as much as user lets them), as long as they do it via Google's servers. What they can't do is bypass GCM/FCM. Nothing to do with UX.

Couldn't attacker (NSA) infer times of phonecalls/messages from GCM? This might not seem like much, but it is another piece of metadata... </armchair>

On top of that, they have this annoying feature where they list the number of minutes left. Like I want a reminder how much time I am wasting reading some random blog. Not really an example of great UX...

Does it include all the codecs by default? I think this was a major reason VLC succeeded the way it did. With all other players (BPlayer anyone?) you needed to find and install tons of codecs while in VLC it just worked.

The OP's advice wasn't meant for VCs, it was for the founders. Their role is very different and the advice looks sound to me. Or do you disagree with it from founders' perspective?

I can vouch for Xperia compact, and my needs are similar to his. Decent battery life (almost as good as with old dumb phones), not much crapware (compared to Samsung that is), android support for older phones. I think X3 just lost its updat

Pain of over engineering might be more hidden and difficult to point at, but in my experience it hurts much more. At least with under-engineered code you know what to do... But will you ever be able to remove unnecessary abstractions?
