You know, I actually judge people by the way they dress. This might sound like a very shallow thing to do at first but I think you get a non-trivial amount of information about a person just by looking at how they dress. Fashion is a visual

If you change the region format from whatever you have to United States, it will however display 73 degrees F and sunny. I don't want to sound like a fanboy but this is some serious attention to detail.

Actually, by late 2003 Phoenix (which is what Firefox used to be called back then) was already an impressive little browser (it was little back then) and IE6 was already horribly outdated and clumsy for those of us who grew a penchant for a

I disagree with this advice and the reason I disagree with it because it completely disregards the human tendency to name objects (not OOP objects, but real-life objects) based on their functionality. Guess what a photocopier does? Or a sca

I'm by no means an expert in this domain but my understanding is that that's normally not happening on x86/x64, not even on Linux or OS X. Otherwise, how could just-in-time compilers like Java, .NET or V8 work? Please correct me however if

Mostly they just don't know how to start. They can't break down the problem into subproblems. Once a candidate managed to break down the problem to subproblems, they can always do the rest easily (solving the subproblems, composing the solu

In my experience, about one in five (20%) people I get to interview can solve basic programming problems on a whiteboard (in their language of choice). It's really depressing.

Maybe the SSL compression was enabled on the web server by a sysadmin who likes to tweaks settings. Maybe he doesn't work at the company anymore. Maybe it was a default setting in a previous version of some exotic distro. Who knows? Maybe t

I think we're prepared for that too. First, we have a few currently unused previous generation Mac Minis lying around that could be used temporarily. Second, since everything we need (Apache and PostgreSQL, minus Mono) comes preinstalled wi

We run non-trivial, large, unmodified .NET 4 C# ASP.NET MVC web apps (compiled on Windows) on Mac Mini Servers on OS X with Mono and Apache. Never had a single problem. It's almost creepy how well it works.

As a PostgreSQL fan myself, the main thing I miss in PostgreSQL (as opposed to DB2 or Oracle) is nice and simple hot backups with point-in-time recovery. It is certainly possible but (at least in 9.0) it requires a non-trivial level of unde
