Variable name length should be inversely proportional to scope visibility. Names in complicated math should also be kept very short. I like to get the best of both worlds by renaming just before the formula: var G = Physics.Gravita

I have told the above story to different audiences. Programmers, as a rule, are delighted by it, and managers, invariably, get more and more annoyed as the story progresses; true mathematicians, however, fail to see the point. If I may ve

Really? Perhaps you know more than I do, but Android "not allowing apks to be sent over Bluetooth" seems pretty unlikely to me. It doesn't allow you to easily get at apks you've downloaded from the Play store, if that's what you mean, bu

Yeah, I'm hoping by "overwritten" he really meant "shadowed". I don't know MATLAB, but being able to change the value of i seems both useless and dangerous.

Yeah, that's what I thought he probably meant, too -- that someone trying to shoot at a threat would miss and hit a child. That's what triggered me saying, "you must not know much about guns." You're welcome to your own judgement call on

Do take it with a grain of salt. I develop for Android, but mostly as a contractor for other people. I can tell you what would worry me as a user, but it's the guys up the thread who have had success selling their own apps that you really

18MB seems pretty heavy for a Sudoku app. And it comes with a lot of permissions, and it's free with no obvious monetization strategy? I don't have data to tell you those things scare away users, but they'd sure as heck scare away me .

If video game kills count, regular old make-believe kills should count too. And I've never met a little boy who didn't have hundreds of those . It's not as historically exceptional as you might think!

Not an improvement for me. I almost always keep what I'm reading near the top of the screen. I like to be able to scan ahead, read the lead lines on coming paragraphs, see how close I am to the end of the sentence/paragraph/chapter, or eve

That parses. It just implies there's only one security camera. And you and the sign painter already know of and speak informally about it. And it's operating RIGHT NOW.

I'm not apologizing for gerrymandering in the least , but . . . http://catb.org/jargon/html/koans.html#id3141241 . . . just because you didn't put bias into a system doesn't mean it isn't biased.

Oh, then that seems like a pretty pedantic worry. You can't divide by zero in any context; even children know that. It's such an obvious exception that it didn't even occur to me that's what you thought was wrong with the statement.

Yes, and it's pretty easy to prove. Multiplying any rational number by the inverse of another gives you a new rational number. (Zero doesn't have an inverse). A rational number is a number that can be represented as one integer divided by

As a consumer, I prefer this style of monetization to in-app purchasing. At least I know what I'm getting and what the reviews mean. Oddly, though, the market doesn't seem to agree with me. Demo/shareware apps just don't seem to do well.

I agree. The control in the demo looks cumbersome. I've come to the conclusion that touchscreen devices have a lower information throughput than traditional desktop machines. Relative to a mouse, the touchscreen is inaccurate, unreliable,

My favorite way to determine whether my skills are up to date (and what to add in the coming year) is to look at the "Who's Hiring" and "Seeking Freelancer" threads, and tally up what people are asking for. It is a diverse field, though,

It should have Iron Man. Maybe also A Beautiful Mind. Closer to home, if we're doing documentaries, Revolution OS maybe ought to be there.
