Al Capone was arrested, tried, and jailed for tax evasion rather than all of the much more series crimes he committed. This approach to law enforcement has been going on for long time now, sometimes with good outcomes. I think the problem n

If you're a large institution, and you want to sell an enormous amount of shares in some stock, the price of that stock should plummet if there aren't buyers available at the price you want to sell. Having a market maker buy tho

I don't think that's true. It's certainly more convenient for me to go the grocer and know that, usually, they'll have bananas for sale. However, during the summer in my town there is a farmers market every week, where I

The iOS development philosophy is that developers should not have to worry about any of this, and their apps should just work. Microsoft, and IBM before them, had that same philosophy: if only everyone would use the current version of the

I don't see the value; I never have. I understand that the market maker is able to extract profit from the spread, but they keep that for themselves. The original buyer and seller don't gain anything they wouldn't have gained

I've never understood the claim that "market makers" are providing a valuable service in the stock market by providing liquidity and reducing spreads. If this is a necessary service, why aren't there market makers in eve

When it comes to medical care, you have to be really careful about how you define "outcome" if you want to use that as an incentive. You can't just use patient recovery/survival, because then you'd have doctors avoi

Syncing over the home network wouldn't be enough; one of the big features of Dropbox is that you can sync devices anywhere. Eg: my phone, my office PC, and my home PC all share the same Dropbox folder. Since we're not all IPv6 yet

When we got acquired we became much, much bigger. Depending on how you counted divisions you could come up with anywhere between 50 to hundreds of developers. A few of our projects involved developers coordinating across those divisions, bu

What, exactly, prevents a binary protocol definition from being overly flexible and complex? I've seen quite a few like that, and I've seen quite a few simple and easy to parse text protocols.

It sounds like your argument is a preference for a pre-written parser library over having to write the parser yourself. Yeah, sure, no one would disagree with that for day to day use. It's when you don't have the pre-written libra

I don't think I agree with your analysis. C# was originally designed to look a lot more like Java than Java ever looked like C, but it hasn't been hampered by that and has evolved to be a much more advanced language than Java has.
