I'd like some feedback about the idea and implementation. If you've got any ideas to make it better, I'd love to hear them. The code is also on Github: https://github.com/SGrondin/unblock.us.org

Nice list, I've used most of those tools at the previous startup I worked at. Shameless plug: You might find this tool I wrote useful in plenty of situations: https://github.com/SGrondin/bottleneck

Basically, catch SIGINT, then stop listening to a socket/port. Finish all current requests and exit. The "watcher" parent process will restart the process with the new executable. Repeat for all other processes listening to t

My friends and I were heavy Wave users back in college. It was simply the best tool available by combining chat, Google docs and forums into a single tool. It was slow at first, but after the first 6 months of improvements it became progres

I disagree. Even back in 2005-2006 - almost a decade ago!, in Guild Wars pvp, it was possible to interrupt a 1 second spell with a 1/4 second one, leaving you with 750ms for human reaction time and latency.

I'd like to mention my favorite tool to deal with Callback Hell: Streamline, a JavaScript (and CoffeeScript) language extension that can compile to either 1) callback spaghetti 2) Node-fibers or 3) generator code. It basically writes t

Not true for marketing-oriented companies that grew huge by having a really good salesforce and managing to become the go-to name in slow, bureaucratic markets such as governments.

If anything, it's a good thing that the cycles are getting shorter. There's more ideas going around between languages, more experimentation, etc. Language evolution is accelerating and it's exciting.

The thing about math is that you don't know what you're missing until you learn more. It sometimes lets you solve hard problems in an incredibly obvious and simple way because you knew a mathematical solution existed. Ignorance of

Yup, but CoffeeScript introduces 99 other ways for beginners to create awful code, it's way easier to shoot yourself in the foot than with just JavaScript. I still prefer CoffeeScript, though.

ETS also makes students do a co-op after only one term and considering that 90%+ of the students there come from a CEGEP degree (technical degree) and have already completed 2 co-op terms, I can safely say that UW isn't alone.

That's actually exactly what happens. Co-op programs are huge in Québec and that's a good thing. Government jobs usually pay 30-40% less and most of the time the less skilled students end up doing their co-op(s)/internship(s)

Jobs was strongly against the stylus and famously said something like "God gave us 10 styluses at birth". Maybe part of his legacy is a company filled with people having the same opinion.

Yes, many (most?) accountants that don't specialize in personal accounting and tax filing recognize the value in having someone more knowledgeable than them take care of documents with a large impact on their lives.

That's exactly how I do it for my Node programs. Any service that I want to have 100% is using the cluster module, resulting in multiple processes listening to the same port. When I want to update, I replace the files and kill the proc
