This is great. It effectively makes ActionScript 3 into YALTCTJS; Yet Another Language That Compiles To JavaScript, just like CoffeeScript and TypeScript. In particular, AS3 is strongly typed; you could say it puts the Java into JavaScript.

Various people are working on this: Jangaroo and Flex-ASJS/FalconJX (part of Apache Flex) are the two most active projects.

And that is why, 25 years on, I still use hard tabs rather than spaces. I got into the habit on the Amstrad CPC using the Maxam assembler. 40k was the limit for a source file and some of the stuff I did, like a UK-wide route-planning progra

Don't know about Commodore BASIC, but in Locomotive BASIC on the Amstrad CPC, "?" was just a text-entry convenience rather than a memory-saver. BASIC was stored tokenised, so "?" was one byte same as "PRINT&quo

Not really. Advance fares on most UK train lines are cheaper than advance fares on most planes IMX. The mistake most people make is comparing walk-up-and-go train fares with advance plane tickets.

Domestic flights in the UK aren't critical infrastructure, they're luxury. We have trains.

That's pretty much what MapQuest Open tries to do: http://open.mapquest.com/ . Expect routing to come to osm.org within the year, too.

Or you could just use OpenStreetMap which, y'know, gives you access to the Actual Map Data rather than having to reverse-engineer it from the rendered image...

"A charity (except in special circumstances) cannot pay a salary to anyone." That's not true for the UK, either. Lots of charities have sizeable paid staff: Oxfam GB has about 6,000, the Canal & River Trust about 2,000, a

Sorry, should have made myself clearer. I'm not saying that Google just uses SRTM - I'm sure they throw lots of other sources and general Google Magick in there. But for most people in most places, SRTM is good enough.

Worrying about TIN is the 10% case. Simple interpolation within SRTM raster tiles is all that's needed for 90% of cases (IMHO, obviously).

CycleStreets (UK cycle-based journey planner) are on the verge of open-sourcing their code - as in, in the next day or two. It's a highly fine-tuned cycle planner based on OSM data; here in the UK, at least, the results are streets ahe

Building your own elevation API is absolutely trivial; I don't know why anyone would even want to pirate Google's API for large-scale usage. Firstly, the data is freely available. It's NASA's SRTM [1], downloadable from

Great idea. Yes please! But Markdown as UI... is less than ideal. It's great for hackers, but there's already a GitHub for hackers, and it's called GitHub. No matter how much prose.io prettifies it, you still get those damn a

I travel light and find the train's advantage is actually greater in rush hour (sure, you might have to stand, but you won't get fouled up by jams like the taxi would). But yes, point taken, if you've got lots of bags it'

Personally: 1. Use app to find time of next train. 2. Walk to station. 3. Pay reasonable-cost, fixed fare using ticket machine. 4. Train takes me to airport. 5. Arrive at airport with one quarter of the carbon emissions (source: http:/
