I'm not sure how what we used to do or wait for is relevant now. Technology and it's pace isn't the same as it was decades ago, and I see no reason that we should hold it to the standard of that time.

If I had to guess I would say that Dota is a very complex environment that could be akin to real-world complexity that is simulatable to the point that simulation and the real game work identical. The real world isn't nearly as clean,

another thing I used a ton when going through part 1 was being signed into my google account, google kept track of my progress through the video and if I exited out and came back on a different machine it would resume where I last left off,

I am going to speculate that it isn't poor engineering per-say but more likely that they are solving for 95-99% use case and not spending the man-hours to make their systems work for the rest.

To be fair I don't think Google is the gold standard for hardware. Outside of a few successful hardware releases (Chromecast and arguably the pixel line) they seem to struggle in this area.
