If the multiple outer joins or subqueries are too slow you can always denormalise a bit, you don't have to give up on your SQL database if you don't want to.

You just store the entire tree? Then how do you get a subtree? I don't think you're solving anything by just storing the whole tree as one thing. I mean you can do that in SQL too if you want.

In the USA this is true but European countries have already given the green light to a somewhat watered-down version of self-driving cars on public roads. The USA will eventually follow I would think.

There was no sudden crippling surge in this case as far as I can tell. There was no mass-updating of a single object either. It failed even though it fits your ideal situation pretty much perfectly.

The whole point of MongoDB is that you SHOULDN'T have to worry about a server becoming overloaded! You're giving up a lot for this privilege too, so if that doesn't even work properly then... back to PostgreSQL in my opinion.

That's great in theory but once an application becomes big and settled it is usually too big to just 'upgrade'. Upgrading becomes a massive time sink and when there's other deadlines pressing for stuff that your clients will actually notice
