I explained it using a bank account. That works well enough. It's just that I couldn't come up with many real-world problems and exercises that are naturally solved with classes. Classes are a rather high-level abstraction, and mo

Re floats: True, this problem is universal. I still wish there was a way to circumvent it, much like the arbitrary precision integers circumvent integer problems. Rationals and fractional integers come to mind, though I don't know thei

I have taught an introductory course for programming in Python, and there certainly are a few areas that are less than ideal for beginners. 1) Setting up Python, a text editor and a shell is easy on Windows (using WinPython), but pretty con

I was going to say the same thing. But then, my MacBook DOES NOT HAVE A RIGHT CTRL KEY. I... I can't begin to explain how annoyed I am of this fact. This, above all else, is the reason for why my next laptop will probably not be a Mac.

I block ads. I'd rather not read a website than read it with ads. If your business needs me to see your ads, I'd rather not be your customer. If these practices will bring down the ad industry, all the better.

I would presume that the author is very proficient with Emacs and not deeply familiar with Light Table. If this is true, the tutorial would probably not teach you the most idiomatic way of using Light Table.

Funny. I use DDG as my default. Frankly, I think it's results are way better than Google's. Yes, they are more simple-minded and less "intelligent", but then they are much more predictable as well. As such, it took some

The thing is, I don't think we have sacrificed anything. No one ever gave the NSA explicit authority to do the things it does. It's just that they did do them snyway.

At this point, it may well be impossible to shut down the NSA. I imagine every opposing politician gets visited by some agent at some point, showing him records of his own wrongdoings. Imagine every politician ever be forced to choose betwe

I think they would want you to use QML for that. Code your interface in QML, access your platform libraries in Java/Obj-C. This actually makes a lot of sense, since QML can represent just about any GUI logic and you need your native pl

A craftsman takes wood and creates a bench. The bench is worth more than the wood. Thus, he created value. A manager does not do anything like that. He does indeed do valuable work, by enabling others to create value, but he does not create

There is an incredible amount of negativity in this thread. They said all the landscapes are procedurally generated. They did not say that there won't be any missions or tech trees or some other kind of hand-crafted progression system.

I think this is usually called What You See Is What You Mean, or WYSIWYM. However, there could be a performance problem. Font setting and layout in Latex is markedly superior to, say, web browsers or Word. But Latex often takes several seco
