The article has the good premise, of course you should learn SQL, but it goes over the top and makes some false presumptions for the sake of the argument: 'Think about it, though: it’s absurd that you would even need to learn any SQL at all

I now understand that it won't be optimized away because it's doing something, and I think I still want it to do that something. I've run into plenty of ORM limitations and use custom SQL for procedures and custom joints, but I still wouldn

Great point, I didn't even think of that! The join there is for a reason, and that you're getting the entire 'model' not a field. If someone thinks what ORM does in this case is stupid, they probably think table constraints are stupid.

So the ORM is too stupid to know that in the case the other_id is NULL, it doesn't need to create a join subquery. But would you rather the PostgreSQL query planner figure this out or do it yourself in python? I would like to see the time d

of all the languages, python probably needs this the least. it's been my main language for 8 years, and once I initially learned the functions, I never needed to be reminded.

Why do you think so many books don't use colors, images and other ways to convey information? Why do you think comments on this website don't let you use colors, images and videos?

I agree that typography, a tiny subset of HTML, is important, and that the emails in article look good and are very readable. However, like with most things, such as scripting and root access, there are security and eyecare concerns involve

No, I don't receive any mass-delivered email that opted-in for, because if I wanted to read something generic I would go to the relevant website or blog. I do, of course, receive some 'group email' which is equally relevant to all the recip

I get a lot of opt-in messages that I didn't really opt-in for, as does everyone. How many people do you think even know what 'opt-in' is ?

HTML as a technology to render plain text obviously isn't getting in the way, because it's plain text. All the features of HTML beyond that get in the way by obscuring the plain text and the information plain text conveys. In my mind, email

Modern email should be completely banning any markup but spaces, going to UTF-8-32 encoding. Maaaybe increasing the maximum column width from 80 to 120, but that's stretching it (hehe).

In a world of so many wonderful free open source graphing libraries, it's hard to see any reasonable licensing option for this. It might help if there was a page that listed features that a developer could not accomplish for $300 in flot, h

There is a lot of work done for this in the scientific community, there are many algorithms. (is http://modis-atmos.gsfc.nasa.gov/MOD06_L2/ ) The most basic way is to look at the reflectivity, which must be very high, and the temperature,

This is interesting, but very low on detail. For example, was another modis product used for clouds or was it based on a simple EVI/water cloud mask? Is this MOD09A1, 500m or 250m? Lastly, why or how is this MODIS layer going to compliment

What is the reason you started this, as oppose to contribute to http://ideditor.com/ or OpenStreetMaps? If people actually spend time on your site, they would be wasting it, as your data will not carry over to OSM based datasets, unless y
