This is called a key escrow, which is known for not working, mainly because the assumptions ("once a court order is granted") can't be implemented technically.

No need to be asked. The browser sends the Accept-Language header depending on the language set in the browser's settings, which defaults to the OS language for the browser installed by default (other browsers will ask at installation)

Most of those examples seem "good" because they prevent nasty behavior. This is conformance to the lowest usage, just like the FBI tries to argue against encryption because bad guys are using it too.

It's not about the applications. It's about the components of the application. Reddit, Wikipedia, Facebook, HN, all use a mixture of RDBMS and NoSQL.
