Both QM and ML are very heavy in linear algebra. Some might say they’re both glorified (or unglorified?) linear algebra. ;)

> I learned calculus, and even had to memorize a bunch of proofs for the course. I'm curious about this. Did your class require students to find many of their own proofs of key results, or was it more about regurgitating proofs from

This sounds like a good strategy for mastering and memorizing a pattern of behavior, which is the demand in most grade school and college math courses. It's nothing like what higher mathematics demands, which is much less about rote me

Thanks for telling me your approach! For all the examples you gave, I feel like those are the sort of thing that become so familiar in the process of working with those objects (e.g. spending long hours seeking proofs of theorems when I f

Out of curiosity, what sort of cards do you use for math? For language learning it's obvious -- words, phrases, etc. -- but for math, is it like prompts for proofs of theorems, or what?

It appears this just comes down to inadequate inter-departmental accounting, not necessarily a net loss of any total amount of money, much less $21 trillion. The original source appears to be https://www.forbes.com/sites

It’s not perfectly flat, but somewhat close to it, because all of our solar system’s planets formed from the same accretion disk, during which time there was opportunity for exchange of angular momentum.

The rapid emergence of single-celled life on Earth is not necessarily evidence that it was an easy step for evolution. See the discussion surrounding “conditional on success, all the hard steps, no matter how hard, take about the same time”

I think communities already negotiate with developers. But what's good for the local community isn't the same as what's good for the region as a whole. The housing crisis is regional; the benefits from development extend far

I also came close to pointing that out, and then I noticed that it only makes palindromes of this sequence more probable, rather than guaranteeing them (see my comment on Math SE).

It's a mistake to look for the single reason someone won an election. There are always many causal factors, all working together, which result in the outcome.

I think we’re not really disagreeing about anything. In a pure math context, x would be, as you say, a quantity in which dimensions play no role.

That’s fine as a pure mathematics perspective, but in physics dimensions come into play often, and one often has polynomials whose domain and coefficients come “tagged” with particular dimensions.

Such a polynomial only makes sense when x is a dimensionless quantity, or alternatively when the coefficients have appropriate dimensions to compensate.
