I was wondering about Best Buy too. Does anyone know what's going on with them? Last I heard (2017), they were trying hard to be more "on-demand" in response to Amazon. They were quite fully aware of people "demoing"

In Boston the downtown B&N is actually pretty uninspired, and the store is probably 60% non-book items. It's like an airport bookstore (Hudson News in the US). And yet, from my experience no place in the city has a more comprehensi

I couldn't agree more with this. I think it's the OP that hasn't taken a close enough look at the B&N employee's "situation" and just spouted off an opinion.

Great points, this is very much also true on my experience. Once the decision is made to lay off, often work is done to make sure that they don't use company resources to get their next job. It's quite accepted in business circles

In my experience the actual axe coming down is done in a terse, bloodless manner for legal reasons. Up until that point, managers are comfortable being cordial. Managers I've known are terrified about being sued and decide being heartl

The secondhand life of books is an ongoing fascination of mine. I liked an NPR piece about where books go after they are donated[0]. Mostly to giant warehouses trying to flip them on Amazon for a few cents at scale...or something more exoti

This is overall great advice for anyone on any field. Being hungry, humble, an active member of the community and developing your own niche is great advice.

I am also concerned about the accountability. It's been some time -- 48 hours or so, and not even a brief statement from management? This is like PR 101 to me. The most shocking thing so far is their silence -- Mozilla is not a new org

By nature (ahem), editors of these journals are responsible for what goes in their pages. Decisions of what to run have some motive - you can call them "political," or "profit-driven." But this has always been there. If

I've had nothing but trouble with Here maps (now HERE WeGo), in the eastern USA at least. Its UI/UX is sadly far behind GMaps. I would love an alternative...

I love OSM (I contribute whenever I can!), and navigation on OsmAnd~ is possible , but Google Maps is far, far easier to use. I really struggle with a Google Maps replacement; I've also tried "Here We Go" but it doesn't

What motivates the senior scientists to do this? Is it because they want to guide the latest research in high-impact journals, oblivious of any profit motive? In the life sciences, many top researchers are actually editors or on the board

The article links to a 2005 NYT article about wifi-less coffee shops, and another to a 2010 version of the same. What a nothingburger! Does anyone else have good reading on this subject? As someone who haunts coffee shops habitually, I'

Question to the Machine Learning folk: are five-star ratings "better" than thumbs up/down, or is it just a matter of algorithm design? I know ratings/prediction has long been studied by the MovieLens.org scientists.
