That’s highly specific to the US. Most other English-speaking countries say “the Fourth of July”. To me it feels weird to say July fourth.

This quote makes me giggle: One does not seriously attack the expertise of a scientist using the undefined phrase 'butt-head'."

Not my preference, even for personal projects. How many times have you come back to an old project and thought “what the heck is this?”. I know it’s a lot for me. Over the years I’ve learnt to prioritise readability and to never abbreviate.

Interesting comment actually. I would have assumed that the vast majority of people using Linux are still sysadmins in small and large companies - this is certainly my personal experience. I wonder how many home users there are versus syste

They can’t make money at the original price point, that’s the problem. The whole goal is 1) disrupt the market, 2) become the market, 3) raise prices to become profitable, thus becoming the incumbent provider and bringing us back to the sam

Are Envy apples a thing in the US? They’re available here in Australia and are light years better than everything else I’ve ever had, at basically the same price point.

I mostly lived in modded Q3A - held a few world records in DeFRaG from time to time, but none that were important. I miss those days, they were the best of times :D

Soundcloud is one of the last bastions of creator-driven music hosting - I’m happy to support the platform given how useful it is to the indie community. There’s a myriad of mixes and tunes on there that would simply never exist or be found

FYI - AirTags don’t support MagSafe charging. You need to replace the coin cell in them about once a year.

I've been using a lightly customised version of the FlatUI colour scheme for around a decade and really haven't run into any situations where it's caused issues: png file: https://drive.google.com/file/d&

Thank you! Sadly my English teachers in high school wouldn’t accept this as a response to their request for an essay on Tolkien. It was extremely frustrating, to say the least, given his repeated stance on the matter.

Supercar hire businesses do exist though, and I can certainly rent one for a day in many places all over the world. Regarding Netflix - I’m referring to OG Netflix which really did seem to aggregate everything under one subscription. In any

I agree with you. Where the gap lies for me is that I can’t just buy one meal, I have to sign up for the yearly meal plan even if I just want one meal. A few years ago I tracked how many times I visited some of the various paywalls sites fo

Judging from the enthusiasm from HN toward this in general, it seems like I'm in the minority in that I hate this experience. I was born in '87, for reference. Channel flipping always frustrated me, and I haven't had TV hook

If you're on Windows 10+ then there's a mono audio toggle in the Windows accessibility settings. I use it all the time to fix this exact issue.

Audis don't have transfer cases - that's the key difference between AWD and 4WD.

Engineering Explained on Youtube has a very comprehensive video covering this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk246sutET0 At a very simple level it boils down to: Do you have a transfer case? If yes, then it's a 4WD.

5V GPIO is a huge deal for me - this immediately opens up a huge range of integrations without having to worry about line level conversion. I can’t wait to use this!

Very interesting read. I didn’t go in with great expectations but my take away was that I should spend significantly more time creating guiderails and working collaboratively with the LLM to get the correct results.

Most cruise control systems let you do this already. I know I can accelerate harder than the system does by itself and it’ll just let me do it, then drop back to its usual program once I stop. I wouldn’t like it if I had to consciously stop

I use resume all the time - the first example that comes to mind is that cruise control won’t stop at a red light (obviously), so I’ll brake to a stop, then all I need to do is start taking off again and hit resume. No need to think.
