I might be missing something but the first Facebook example used in the article seems wrongly applied to this problem. They just transferred the menu bar to the bottom. All the icons, which were at the top, are now just located at the botto

You could use type="tel"[0]. If you specify the pattern it will even validate it on a decent enough browser. [0] http://www.w3.org/TR/html-markup/input.tel.html
