Semi-retired. Started a PhD. Getting up whenever I like, though trying not to get under my kids' feet when they are having breakfast before school. And going out clubbing again. I seem somehow, partly because of some mild volunteeri

I started and ran a small early (UK) ISP in the 90s! I can't remember how we did the billing but it was better than that. I suspect that it involved awk with : separated fields, because I remember my dyslexic colleague saying that al

Well, I think there is lots of interesing DS stuff to be done. I've had very good value out of a couple of DS folks who worked for me. And on the side while doing my PhD I'm trying to absorb some DS skills because they will be

Sometimes people won't believe you, even with the facts in front of them, because their world is too small for them to conceive that what you did is possible. You don't want to work with those people, but they exist. I had a fair

I don't know who would pay for data sciencing at the level that you probably want outside finance except possibly some of the AI outfits in a hurry, maybe even relatively new ones but flush with cash...

Do you have trading records good enough for your tax authorities? Those might suffice. I think that the desks that I worked with in the City (derivatives, credit, high speed trading), though a while ago now, would be interested in your exp

Ethically, IMHO, if you owe monies to third parties for undisputed work done, you should pay that. But as said in another response, hire a (not-too-fancy) lawyer or a company liqudator to constrain how messy this may get.

It's hard work, but not much like any of those for me, and less each time I have another go. I see a problem that needs fixing or something that needs doing and I get on and do it. There is definitely angst on the way, but no need at

Another is TCP congestion control including new variants such as BBR2 and relatives in QUIC: https://www.theregister.com/2023/09/24/tcp_congestion_contro... You can probably get to hack on some of that work!

As well as USENET that I mentioned elsewhere, a slightly less obvious set of distributed alogirthms are those that eg govern how small generators such as solar PV inverters sync to a grid, drop off if anything goes horribly wrong, ride thro

The flooding algorithm of USENET is a wonder. Still worth understanding how it actually avoided endlessly sending the same articles in loops for example. (I used to run one of the world's busiest USENET nodes from my house for a short

I keep a browser tab open for each of my two Mastodon accounts (fulfilling different roles); they are on different servers. It's easy. I don't even run an app. I also use the 'personal' Mastodon account from my phone,

I have accounts on two different instances: one small and very subject focussed, and one on a big instance. I try to keep roughly to topic on the former, but no one is shouting at me when I have a little fun on either.

Profit/margin was not larger than the ulp for single-precision float values for derivatives by the time I got there, so we all were using doubles. The rounding-for-settlement issue that you describe is, I think, separate.

More to the point binary fp absolutely is a bad approximation to, and does poor arithmetic on, common legal sub-1 decimal currency values, ie those that do not have an exact binary fp representation.
