This position would be replacing me, since I'm emigrating to Canada. Email andrew.harrison@myedu.com if you have any questions about development or company culture.

I had this same sentiment within the past few days, as I resolved to finally get involved in an open source project. I'm grateful for the mentions of OpenHatch and Launchpad -- I started with Github, and for as much as I enjoy the site, I f

Surprisingly, http://porn.xxx _is_ safe for work -- it's an informational page tied to http://icmregistry.com . It seems like competition for porn-related domain names will be condensed into a very small space within the .xxx TLD. I'm cu

I'm hoping that I never have to write C/C++ or use vim/emacs extensively during my programming career. I'm perfectly content to leave that work to someone else.

We're experimenting with IRC at MyEdu; while it hasn't been awful for non-technical users, it's not necessarily great either. The above-mentioned HipChat seems like it could be more viable, so I'm adding it to the candidate list. EDIT: Not

"Make it something you'd actually use" is of great value to a budding (aimless, excited) programmer, but staying too long in this mindset leads to a glut of products and services serving the same purpose for the same market. The highly-upvo

Might I suggest a slide-out panel with common Markdown/etc. symbols? My experience was 1) Click the link in the article, intro page didn't load (during the brief watcher script error) 2) Navigate directly to Notepag.es, get a blank doc 3) .

If version numbers weren't useful for marketing, I'd suggest using a hash of the codebase as a true version identifier. It'd be a consistent umpteen alphanumerics long (no more squabbling over who has the biggest number) and could actually

The existence of isolated social groups isn't a mind-blowing concept to me, but not something I think about daily either. Does a new awareness of the exception to the rule really change your perception of how interconnected most of humanity

I don't know what our hiring schedule looks like, but MyEdu (Austin) will be growing its developer team at some point. I'll try to get details posted in a jobs thread when openings are definitely available. Most advertised positions have be

You're suggesting that a criminal would put valuable illegal merchandise in the hands of a stranger and trust that he'll carry out nefarious schemes for a reward valued less than a Foursquare badge? Interesting. The paper trail doesn't help

I just might have to hop into this. The last ARG I played was a decade ago, and few premises since then have excited me as much as this one. Unlike a few other commenters, I'm not particularly worried about being a party to real-life crime.

Looks nice, I'm willing to give it a spin. Reminds me of http://corkboard.me which was posted on HN not too long ago, but I've never found a use for ownerless apps like that.

+1 for Highcharts. We use it at MyEdu, switched away from Fusioncharts. I've had to write some workarounds for the occasional bug, but the maintainer is incredibly responsive to feedback, so drop a comment on GitHub or the Highslide forum

This is one of the more heinous quotes in the entire article. First, it seems to write off any sense of plasticity in cognition and learning. Second, these people clearly were successful in that they earned a degree, so ojbyrne is right i

Another 25-year-old in the same situation (not leading a startup, participating in one). Many thanks to the OP and all commenters; it seems like there are a lot of eyes on this thread.

I was in a similar situation just two years ago -- newly minted college graduate, didn't have a CS or related degree, trying to find work based on a couple of programming classes I took and a meager handful of outside projects. I used Monst
