Wow, what a great set of tips. This is also a great guide for benchmarking any software, so long as its execution is highly deterministic like compression algorithms are. This will probably be my goto reference when someone shows me a bench

Perhaps somewhat, but I think the main factor is that computers change much faster than these people expect. "No [family member], this Bluetooth mouse isn't going to work with your XP era desktop."

These sites are hiding in the deep web on purpose. Google doesn't index sites that don't want to be indexed. It respects a site's robots.txt, for example.
