I recently started using youtube-dl and it is an incredible tool. Also, despite its name, it works on lots of sites.

I love reading stuff like this. Thanks for posting the link OP.

> There's no filesystem journal That's one that has been sticking out to me lately. Both NetBSD and OpenBSD, as much as I like them, lack a modern filesystem..

I installed Debian on a virtual machine the other day and, frankly, it felt a lot like using Solaris: a weird init system paired with unintuitive commands for manipulating network interfaces. All that said, it worked well in my testing, and

Indeed, this article also could have been titled "Apple obeys the law of countries that it does business in", but it wouldn't have been as attention getting.

Agreed. When I worked in CIC/CDC, it was always darkened, and a white interface would have been super annoying.

Wouldn’t that result in transcoding from one lossy audio format to another? I’ve always been advised against that.

I personally detest the whole XDG thing but lots of non-XDG applications are guilty of littering the home directory. For example, every time I use the Less pager, it creates a .lesshst file (fixable by setting "LESSHISTFILE" to &q

I don't mind Fedora wanting to get counts of things, provided it is exclusively an opt-in feature. Debian's 'popcon' is an example of doing it right.

This has been my experience as well. The one time I had to go to the hospital while uninsured, while in-between jobs, they immediately tried to negotiate a settlement with me. This has made me wonder what the point of these high prices are

It is kind of sad how every single web-based technology is turned against us. I shudder to think what they will be able to do with Web Assembly.

The intersection between the public domain and trademarks is pretty interesting. For example, Marvel Comics recently paid to re-obtain the rights to publish Conan comic books, even though the character and original stories are in the public

The linked article doesn't say anything about "end-of-year". But it does refer to the donations as a "surprise".

I personally don't like the idea of FreeBSD being downstream from a project that can't even be included with the OS it is being designed for.

Very nice. I've been playing with DF in a virtual machine over the past week and it seems very nice - although I think the Hammer2 command could be more useful.

I am testing Nnn via Homebrew and I am also missing the ability to delete. The in-program help lists '^X' as Quit. Is anyone else who installed via Homebrew able to delete?

I used to think that being open-source was enough to avoid being spied on but it is not. Ubuntu showed this with the Amazon search issue [1] and is apparently collecting telemetry with 18.04 LTS [2]. My understanding is that Brew also gathe
