Varnish seemed really popular a decade ago, but I wonder how it fits the modern web and who's using it today and for what purpose. The lack of built-in HTTPS seems killer to me. On the client-facing side it needs a separate daemon for

I don't think this is the case here. It's not hard to agree that shared libraries are meant to be _shared_ among different applications and when they're not (or not shared enough, which is a subjective measure) it's best

Imagine I use software "X" which is licensed under GPLv2-or-later and put it inside locked-down hardware. Then someone else comes along and chooses to use it under GPLv3, then proceeds to sue me because I can't lock down GPLv

The "or later" bit was meaningless until the first GPLv3 (or later) code change was introduced, and it wasn't forced by anyone since it wasn't even part of the license. Users of GPLv2-or-later software cannot use GPLv3 c

I can totally sympathize with this idea. When you pick a tool to make a specific task easier, you want it to do exactly that. I see this all the time in conversation (with younger developers, mostly). They find it very difficult to understa

This is why the invention of LVM was such a good idea even for simpler systems (where some people claimed it was useless overhead). In my old sysadmin days I never allocated a full disk. The "menace" of an almost full filesystem

What do you mean? If you run pip freeze inside a venv it will print every user-installed module and their dependencies. When installing them in a new venv as a requirements file, you end up with the exact same set of modules.
