Pedantry: BBX hasn't shipped yet outside the PlayBook, and I'd hardly call that popular. The phones are still running the original since-1999 BlackBerry OS. And why not BSD? I'd mainly say mindshare, and portability to a degree. You don't h

Amazon and Netflix are now direct competitors to HBO; "partnering" with them would be at best surrender, and at worst suicide. Apple's a non-option; if they wanted in the subscription streaming business, they'd do it themselves. Independenc

As mentioned, Apple has plenty of experience switching architectures, so technically it's not a huge issue. Don't hold your breath though; since Apple's going out of it's way to build custom ARM cores now, it's safe to assume ARM (or if any

Most Android phones don't have glass running all the way to the edge, I'd imagine that's a factor. Semi-related: I've dropped a pocketknife blade first on a Nokia E71. There's the tiniest scuff on the screen, that's it. (And it's still in a

Depends on the lighting; can be anywhere between instant and 2s. Trade-off is the camera's useless in the dark, takes maybe 1s for the phone to realize this (or there's an override button) and falls back to pattern/PIN.

Simple fix: permissions. > [Podcast App] would like to run in the background. You can change this at any time. Allow/Deny? Or perhaps being a bit more specific: > [Podcast App] would like to sync nightly. Allow/Deny/Charging Only?

How will functions learn to stay in line if the compiler doesn't make an example every now and then? On a serious note, what you're thinking of is contracts, like so[0] [0] http://disnetdev.com/contracts.coffee/

I imagine many things use Unix time or a similarly flat calendar internally (Twitter's Snowflake[0] uses a custom scale), it's the translation into the Gregorian (/Jewish/Mayan/etc) calendar and time scale where the bugs come from. Can't co

I have a hard time (ow) having much anger over time-related bugs these days. Seems the only real way of getting the calendar more programmer-friendly is to switch the world over to Unix time.

Just one: don't try to. :) As I said, you have to write separate UI on each platform, and you use the native toolkits (there's no fancy abstract cross-platform UI kit in Mono), so there's little chance of looking much out of place as long a

Xamarin's examples for MonoDroid are (IMHO) pretty solid, to the point where I'll go to them first instead of the Android docs (even though I'm writing Java[0]). It's true you have to re-write the UI code on every platform, but it's still t

Worth pointing out that CrOS's "secure boot" is somewhat unique among mainstream OSes in that it still respects the user's wishes by design[0] (aka developer mode), unlike iOS, WinRT, and (with some exceptions) Android devices. [0] http://

The Twitter comparison doesn't work here; Bancorp is explicitly a middleman. As long as Bancorp is getting paid, it's in their best interest (excuse the pun) for Simple to stay afloat. Bancorp is a closer analog to EC2; they let Simple get

That's the developer's choice. Pay the price on the tin, switch to Android where they've chosen to make it free, or find an alternative. The market will sort itself out if it's truly priced too high.

Booting Windows on x86 Macs (pre-Boot Camp) was mainly a problem of hardware support; Windows simply didn't support booting via UEFI in 2006, and Macs didn't ship with BIOS emulation. Linux can boot on UEFI systems; the problem here is Secu

If you're already familiar with SQL (which your average C# programmer likely is), select/where/aggregate look familiar to you, so less of a mental leap to understand them. And being able to say 'it's like in-line SQL!' makes Linq more accep

If the designer was particularly paranoid, they could be keeping the keys in RAM only (on machines without swap, of course). If the keys never touch disk, easier to purge them and know they're gone.

Only real difference I'm aware of is the release schedule; as far as I can tell the plugins get major updates with IntelliJ releases, not alongside the separate IDEs. (It's possible I'm wrong, just my observations)
