It's called the "Power Law" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_law You also hear a lot about the top 20% taking 80% of the gains which is a special case of the power law called Pareto Distribution > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paret

Yes you totally can. You can live by Stanford, attend the meetups/hackatons/events that all of the stanford students are going to, and help out with some of the entrepreneurial programs (SSE Labs, BASES, Think Outside, etc).

The media in general loves to fit stories into archetypal stories that are easily digested by audiences. The 20 year old scrappy kid fits right into the "David vs. Goliath" archetype, people love to hear stories about someone winning again
