What part of the plant suggests that it "wants" anything instead of just being adapted by force of natural selection to respond in certain ways? There is nothing in plants that should make us believe they can do anything like thin

Stress and harm are loaded words for stimuli here. Parts of plants can be triggered by a stimulus to begin emitting chemical signals that govern growth, senescence, etc elsewhere in the plant. They do this in response to a wide range of sti

I love the cheese grater but I don't care for the chrome handles and feet either. They remind me of bed frames and office chairs. I think the G5 case was peak design for a tower that's hard to top but Apple's surprised me bef

I find the messed-up imagery disturbing not necessarily because of what they depict but because it's such a convincing emulation of "visions" I've had when my brain is doing... not so great. Illness, fever dreams, and ba

On the topic of 800 numbers with words, there used to be a satellite TV service called Primestar and they advertised their number as 1-800-PRIMESTAR, which is too long, man. I think I've seen this elsewhere since but the memory of this

The recording is made in the dye layer, a chemical change, and the dye degrades (particularly in sunlight) so the discs have a limited shelf life. Checking Wikipedia, it appears azo dye formulations can be good for tens of years. Melting po

I would be surprised if it used helical recording. Data tape recorders rarely do because it's much more complex, increases tape wear, and the use cases don't usually demand that kind of linear bandwidth.

Though I loathe Cox for several reasons, in my neck of the woods, they offer wifi with excellent coverage over the neighborhood. Captive portal can be logged into with Cox account credentials. I've used it several times as a backup, e.

AGI seems plausible enough but especially for the other two, I don't think we can take it for granted that the development of these technologies is imminent; that it will be economical, ethical, or just vaguely wise to use them; or tha

Apple is way out ahead of the pack on this point. No (?) trad PC laptop is on the same level so it seems like kinda a high bar to clear.
