I think what's missing from this post is who is using a language. For Haskell it's academics/researchers. For Ada it's the US government and associated industries. That's what makes niche languages viable, not ove

To be precise, C does not have a defined ABI (the spec goes out of its way to avoid this). Platforms (OS+Arch) define a C ABI for their own tools. Since this ABI is required to interop with the OS APIs, this will usually become the de-facto

One point that Jordan Mechner makes is the limitations made the game better. The whole idea of the mirror guy as an antagonist was inspired by these limitations. Here's someone who is actually in the game world (not just in cutscenes o

I think the three usages of containers often get conflated. 1) Packaging 2) Isolation 3) Secure isolation Containers have dong a good job of packaging and isolating applications. This is has been a boon to development. Particularly with tes

When W3C's XHTML 2.0 stalled WHATWG created a new "living standard" (which is subject to constant modifications and additions) to continue HTML development. W3C attempted to create fixed standards from the document (e.g. HTML

I would note that "ratified by W3C" does not mean much nowadays. WHATWG won that war and the W3C now essentially rubber stamps whatever WHATWG decides.

To be clear, this is not Forbes. This is forbes.com/sites/ which is an unedited blogging network. So long as a blog brings in clicks and doesn't cause problems for Forbes then they don't much care what is posted.

The British response has been to still go ahead with using Huawei for potentially over 30% of their non-core infrastructure. In any case, my point is not that they aren't plausible reasons why they might not make any proof public. My p

In regards to COM I was specially thinking about how virtual functions and methods are layed out. This cannot change without breaking a lot of code. Already this causes issues in non-C++ languages (e.g. the difference with thiscall in C++).
