This is only due to current screen limitations. If someone can pull off a practical light field display, focus and convergence should work together just like they do in the real world. Real light field displays have already been demonstrat

Perhaps you could try a multi-resolution chunk system - LoD for chunks. For large scale features like rivers, generate those at coarse resolution on very large chunks. When generating the detailed chunks, take input from the coarser resolu

It's quite exciting to see progress on a data driven approach to compression. Any compression program encodes a certain amount of information about the correlations of the input data in the program itself. It's a big engineering

I'm honestly a bit fuzzy on exactly how the ATRF will relate to the ITRF from a user's point of view, in particular whether it'll be published as ephemerides or a correction applied to ITRF. (Jargon - ATRF: the to-be-defined

Ugh, all the recent articles I've seen on this are subtly or entirely wrong about the reasons for a datum change (though this article is a lot better than most). It's possible to account and correct for most of the 1.5 meters when

I'm an enthusiastic julia user, observer and very minor contributor. IMO a lot of the issues in this constructive rant have been addressed to some extent. For context, here's the previous HN discussion https://news.yc

There's some interesting complications to the idea of an underlying Cartesian ECEF coordinate system as physical reality. For one thing, gravitational distortion (Earth tide) changes the shape of the solid part of the Earth by ~50cm t

I think your page has a bug - the "original png" seems to be encoded in jpg! (The usual jpg artifacts are very visible around the edges.) Thanks for posting the extra example, the bgp looks very good indeed.
