Yeah, I use Backbone with Marionette on a project that's a few years old ( demo.enterprisejazz.com ). The "freedom to the implementer" part is very important to someone like me. I don't think it would be productive to sw

For me, the cost of having to go through all those steps and learn all those tools is significantly higher than the $300 or so cost of buying Camtasia. For me, it's not just the time cost, but the energy and cognitive resources consume

I got smacked with the broken back button too. Had to close the tab, re-load HN and find my place again. I'm going to guess this is probably not intentional on their end. They're probably aware of the issue, but likely it's a

I feel like if you are trying to make your online flower shop work, you probably shouldn't go near any where near any of these libraries. I think they are for experts who are working on large projects, probably 30,000+ lines. For the c

Perhaps I'm naive, but shouldn't very many users already have jquery cached from several CDNs? So if you use a popular CDN for it, it should affect load times too much in most cases?

.NET is actually the framework that gave me such a bad taste for frameworks. It's important to note that my experience with it is from around 2010-2012 though so it could have gotten much better since. The ORM in particular would somet

AirBnb seemed to not have good prices for off-season beach rentals. I was checking there a few weeks ago and found way better prices for off-season beach rentals on traditional rental sites... sometimes for exactly the same property. I assu

Hmmm, I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. Are you talking about someone doing something like writing their own ad-hoc ORM? I would agree that it's almost always best to use a library where possible, preferably on

I agree, as I look over these posts, it seems the people on opposite sides are visualizing what "not using a framework" means very differently. I assume the "not framework" people are selecting tried and true libraries,

I agree, selecting libraries is a much more fluid approach. Once you get comfortable with your libraries, you basically have your own framework without the commitment.

A developer who doesn't understand SQL could be a little dangerous because they might not understand data structures and big-O concepts (sets, hash tables, etc..). I don't think someone needs to be a wizard with the syntax, but th

At that point, they have a framework that fits their use case and don't have to deal with a bunch of the negatives such as the framework getting abandoned, obfuscation, and the framework fighting their use case... Not that your point i

I hate frameworks. God I hate them. Until I saw this post, I thought I was a simple minded freak in the extreme minority. They are probably great for many people and projects. But someone like me, who wants things just so... I'm always

I tried to buy a CPAP the other day. Had to get one off craigslist. I thought it was weird that you can't just go buy one from the store.

Yeah, I thought that was strange to use a list for the set implementation too. Average set addition and search should be O(1) if using a hash table. O(n) is a problem. Glad they put that clearly at the top though.
