You are right. The best solution is separation of services. But for a startup than runs 7-2 services like this – it’s a close call. You’ll often have to run 2-3 services together, else $100 * 7 machines is too much burn

Cucumbertown co-founder here. Actually I dislike this idea though we should have been better prepared. At my previous firm we had this culture that whenever traffic peaks we spin up new instances. And tools like RightScale & Chef make i

Agree, this was the Achilles heel. It was total blunder not testing full text. In our defense this page was supposed to be HTTP cached and that didn’t happen which led to this domino effect.

Thanks for the feedback. Cucumbertown is very UX focused and from our research we came to a conclusion that our “aha” moment is to get you to the fastest possible way to write a recipe and give you that bout of joy. Now being hackers, we’d

When we did the beta, I posted the launch details on HN and you’ll be surprised by the amount of constructive feedback and users that we got. Cucumbertown now has users from devs to CEO’s who came in through HN and are now engaged users. Cu

Cucumbertown co-founder here. Nginx was serving the cache and our sense was it was caching. But then the day before we put in csrf validation to the login form and it was bypassing the caching. So in theory we were positioned to serve from

Couldn’t agree more. This is one of those reasons why I desist have lawyers, media gurus, MBA (just business) as bosses of “Tech” companies. They just don’t have it in them to jump in and out of situations to think through the most trivial

My startup cucumbertown.com is hit with similar issues. Initially we blocked all Ec2[1] & spamhaus ip list. But then realized Flipboard proxies[2], some blog aggregation proxies etc are based on Ec2 machines. What would be a good way to

Talk about cultures. We are a team of 4 people in 3 continents, none of whom have seen each other http://www.cucumbertown.com/humans and all through our dev process this never struck us. Guess we are the angels on earth. There is a story

For the hacker in us, we’ve built a short-hand notation for writing recipes http://dnhk.me/xSkc I always wanted this as a cook & hacker. Not spend too much time writing a recipe from scratch. More importantly DRY.

You don’t see it since the post recipe is for the users under login. But here’s a peep. http://d.pr/i/DB3L When you try to write a recipe, we figure out if the recipe exists and suggests a “Write a variation”. The variation is essentially

Execution truly does. The name bit is a bit surprising to me. As an Indian the name struck with everyone. But when I came over to the US, the feedback for the name from the average user was – I’d say not so great.

Not to discourage the project (love the interface), but isn’t this far easier to do client side than to send it to a server all the time? If there is a js lib that makes use of canvas then I am ready to buy a license. Also do you provide ad

AngelList Docs user here. The docs make it pretty much a tabular affair. Choose the cap, the money, the discount, acquisition multiples, etc and you are done. This makes for easy work, both with your lawyer and the investors.

YQL is an amazing piece of technology with robust infrastructure to support it. I was first introduced to it at a Yahoo Hackday in Bangalore and since then I’ve used it to to hack up a lot of small scripts. Like this http://userscripts.org
