Sounds like a perfect way to game the system and get three weeks off each year. Just take a full two weeks off during the year and then you magically get an extra week each Christmas ;-) If you know you're doing it ahead of time then you ca

I agree. The way I see it there is a price/value curve where it's worth buying things at both ends. At the high end you're paying a premium but you're getting a well designed and constructed item, which should last you a long time. At the l

One question I have regarding those results is this: Say you determine which socio-economic quartile people lie in at the point they reach 65, and then target extra healthcare/benefits/resources at the bottom quartile (or fifth or whatever)

The 63% refers to people who dont use code review tools, not people who dont use version control.

The article seems to me a just-so story. The author might be ignorant of the rich kids who end up as drug addicts or at the very least entirely economically unproductive simply because they can. They've got nothing to loose by not kowtowing

I think that LA/SF/NYC is not the optimum location in you strategy. I remember seeing an analysis somewhere comparing salary/cost of living and size of city in the US (I tried googling the original article but came up empty). Basically if y

There's often times a hidden variable in the decision to return home - in my case it involved nice curves and brown eyes. I'm a Kiwi and many of us head off overseas in our early twenties, usually with the intention of returning home in a f

New Zealand could be a good option for you. 1) Broadband speeds are good although maybe a little pricey by global standards (eg $55/month for cable, $60/month for ADSL. FYI 1 NZD ~ 1 SGD). The main cities (which generally implies Auckland,

It think it just depends on the company. I moved from NZ to NYC and worked for a software company there (just north of the city in White Plains) for five years. There was a good crew there that went out for drinkies on a regular basis. Some

There's a great deal of good info out there on personal finance blogs, websites and books regarding mortgages and affordability. There is no shortage of good information. Remember most people are making the single biggest purchase of their

Maybe. You're doing the UK a bit of a disservice. You're right that there's lots of nice scenery and the place is littered with castles and ruins. I'm a Kiwi who moved to Edinburgh and even after 5 years here I still love catching site of t

He goes into the research a bit more in the Google talk and you see where he pulls the magic "15% improvement" from. Also he has a book (which I haven't read) called Traffic so he might explain it more or cite studies there. I agree though

Interesting observation is that what TFA calls the "cheaters", ie those who drive to the end of their lane before merging at the last minute, may actually be doing the right thing. See Tom Vanderbilt talk about it here http://www.vimeo.com

I hear you. I remember when I lived in Manhattan on the Upper East Side coming back from a party somewhere in deepest darkest Queens, getting off the subway and biking up the path along the East River. Middle of the night and bucketing with

Unfortunately my experience is that if 1) is the question and there's multi-guess answers then the correct answer will be D) All of the above. Or to put it another way, here's the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant softball team: "No one can g

He's right about two weeks not being the rule; in most western countries four or five weeks is the rule. To me the amount of holiday/vacation is a Big Deal. I was lucky when I lived in the US that my company offered four weeks (and I could
