I think your comparison is more than a little narrow. The Nook and the iPad are marginally similar but not really comparable devices. There's a reason why one has been far more successful than the other, and no, I'm not referring to any sor

I disagree. I remember much of the Tech press predicating a $1000 price point and being rather surprised at the existence of a low end model at $499. It was only the cross section of nerds that really dislike Apple that called it expensive

Are you seriously comparing an iPad to a Nook Color?

I'm not saying I agree with Apple's new policies, but I don't remember seeing any outrage when Amazon was taking a whopping 70% of ebook sales, while simaltenously instituting a most favored nation clause which made it impossible for publis

Not all that surprising. Most existing smartphone users are still under contract. The interesting question is what many of those users will do in June when another iPhone is released. Or in June 2012 when all existing contracts will be up.

I'm not sure this will turn out to be the case. Amazon has always had a most favored nation clause with regards to ebooks, and that policy didn't cause ebook prices to climb, even though Amazon is the largest seller. It's also worth mention

iPad's and iPhone's are not made for small children. People are being a little silly in demanding that Apple child proof their luxury brand gizmos. Your child will not lose IQ points if he doesn't have a shiny iOS device to play with. Give

I'm not saying I agree with this move by Apple, but it's worth mentioning that browsers/the internet =/= the app store.

You are very mistaken about this. Schools in America are largely funded locally. Poor communities correspondingly have poorly funded schools, while better more affluent ones have have better funded ones. Research statistics from any source

The difference is my hypothetical is a realistic one many people face. Yours is just pure fantasy with no connection to reality. Yes personal motivation and attitude to succeed are large factors, ones we should encourage, but the empirical

A lot of well written exchanges in this thread. Too bad much of it is an apologetic for the wealthy evading their civic obligations, yet again. Meanwhile the average working American is lectured daily on the values of "personal responsibili

Yes, the writing style was nauseatingly dramatic, but the callous, dismissive tone of most of the commenters is telling. How would you feel if someone creating a profile/website accusing you of being a child molester? No matter how crudely

It's easy to be judgmental. What would you have done if you didn't have parents to mooch off of for a year? What if you had a family to support? It's easy to tell yourself you succeeded all due to "self control" and "discipline". But the tr

In theory this seems like a reasonable network management practice except for at least two factors - 1. Roughly speaking, what amount of data would put me into the 5% user range? 2. Will you throttle at time specific intervals or just in ge

Too many fall into the latter unfortunately. The desire to make money is fine. It's when it becomes a higher priority than basic morality/decency that it becomes something contemptible.

That's fine. No one faults Google for doing whatever they feel is in their strategic, long term interest. What annoys some people to no end however, is the incessant attempts to market everything they do in the name of "openness".
