>But Ubuntu figured it was ok to ship with zfs. Yes, but it's shipped as a separate kernel module (as in separate file) rather than built into the Linux kernel. As for the legality of this, it can really only be determined in court,

Last I saw, the official AV1 encoder had gone down to 16x slower than VP9, but that was a couple of months ago so things might have improved further. Also there's rav1e which bodly claims to be the fastest (and safest) AV1 encoder, but

My guess would be AV1, on the other hand this is really the space h265 occupies at the moment so maybe they will be effective at holding on to it. I fully expect AV1 to become the new 'de facto' video format on the web which is th

AVIF is primarily a lossy format, the place were WebP shines is in it's lossless mode. Being able to replace PNG as the de facto standard lossless format would yield better compression while still decoding and encoding faster.

Not only that, but it's also MUCH faster than PNG in both decoding and encoding. I use it for all images I store as lossless.

For a 2d game engine like this, there's no problem with a GC based language, people write 60fps 2d games in lua/python (which Go easily outperforms), C# and even 3d games like Minecraft in Java.

I believe it's referring to the old 'It is official; Netcraft confirms: *BSD is dying' statement.

Likely because they have now figured out implementations of these features which they feel work well with the rest of the language design.

Is that really a problem these days ? Nvidia has had very good Linux drivers for a long time and in the recent years, Intel and AMD has made great improvements.

Are you sure it's HEVC, because that would be news indeed. I've never heard of Youtube serving anything but h264 or VP8/VP9.

I was informed that so-called 'scene rules' still dictate the use of h264 in order to qualify as a 'scene release'. I've never seen 10bit h264 used outside of anime, but even there the default seem to be 8-bit h264,

Yeah, I cringed when reading this. The whole 'good guys' routine with Cisco, Google, Mozilla stepping up to fight the evil 'malcorp' for justice was pretty embarrassing. I'm all for a 'de facto' standardis

I believe the main impact comes from Ubuntu using Linux 4.15 and GCC 7.3, while the other distros tested used Linux 4.17 and GCC 8.1+.

I think that hiring someone as an editor who has a long public history of very racist tweets, reflects very poorly on the New York Times. I am not part of any 'online mob', nor am I misogynist or alt-right.

Unless you encode the subtitles directly on the video stream, this is a container solution, the previous Google codecs (vp8/vp9) uses webm, which in turn is based upon mkv, so I would assume AV1 supports subtitles as easily if it uses

I would guess so, but looking at Nyaa atleast, there seem to be very little content encoded in HEVC compared to h264, which seems weird given how the 'anime scene' saw adoption of x264 10bit which is not even hardware accelerated.

Encode speed hasn't seen much optimization, the bitstream was frozen just weeks ago. Also there are already an alternative AV1 encoder in the works, RAV1E, written by Mozilla in Rust, so there will be competition which will likely spee
