You think that TikToks strategic advantage is being able to coordinate “seas of Asians” so that undercover Chinese spies can meet, and presumably since all Asian people look alike no one will be able to know?

Seems pretty consistent to me. People were also upset when IT employees got fired. The general rule that employees good, contractors bad still holds. Even though people seem obsessed with the belief that firing public employees and replacin

This has been posted twice now in HN and seems to have attracted a lot of attention. But this seems to be the type of essay that just confirms HN’s pre-existing beliefs but has no real data around it. I can absolutely see professors from wh

Yeah I think there are a bunch of different reasons that corporations are doing less, interest rates are a major factor, but the point is that it isn’t exactly the “AI is taking our jobs” narrative that people want it to be.

I’m surprised not many people talk about this, but a big reason corporations are able to do layoffs is just that they’re doing less. At my work we used to have thousands of ideas of small improvements to make things better for our users. No

I think the issue is that a lot of orgs are systematically using the tool poorly. I’m responsible for a couple legacy projects with medium sized codebases, and my experience with any kind of maintenance activities has been terrible. New cod

This is a very silly comment when you look at actual prices. Even adjusting for inflation house prices have doubled or tripled in a lot of places while wages have remained stagnant. No amount of scrimping and saving will overcome the fact t

Wild speculation aside, it probably wouldn’t be a good thing for this lawsuit to be successful. Broadly speaking, allowing a nonprofit to own and control a for profit is already a big loophole in the tax system. If the nonprofit then become

This is nice to read because I’ve been recommended rebase by so many people who clearly have no idea what it does and what to do if it goes wrong.

IMO this is a weak criticism. It’s pretty common for eg. podcasts within the same network to promote a new podcast by pointing their listeners towards it. Is it annoying? Yes. Is it a Ponzi scheme? No.

I agree and what you say isn’t incompatible with what I said. But the point of the OP is “why even bother using other models/open source models when OpenAI is cheaper”? Well take away the competition and see what happens.

The bleeding obvious is that OpenAI is doing what most tech companies for the last 20 years have done. Offer the product for dirt cheap to kill off competition, then extract as much value from your users as possible by either mining data or

It’s kind of a miracle engineers are treated as well as we are compared to most traditional office jobs. IMO there’s probably a good reason for it, namely some institutional memory of when engineers would just defect en-masse and literally
