I'm not surprised - I know of at least 3 companies that were abusing the free tier -- running thousands or 10s of thousands of simultaneous dynos on free and keeping them awake. Honestly, its kind of amazing they let it go on this long

There is an added item at play here: the equity stake and future pro-rate amounts are based on invested capital, so for $75k you can get 100k (or more) in pro-rata. (The more comes from the fact that a lot of times this is convertible note

I'd be pretty surprised if the US employed people to do anything like this on domestic US sites at any scale. What would they post? Wouldn't a smart individual from a US site have detected this and shared, or a whistleblower have

If this works the way the article describes, it feels like a fundamental shift forward for humanity as a whole. Critical in that step forward is the notion of open access, even if it isn't free.

Hrm. Interesting concept. There is definitely a problem to be solved here -- I have no idea what to buy. But I also hate shopping in person. I don't want to go to the mall or stores and wait in line or try on clothes. I suspect that th

I was really surprised they didn't discuss, or even mention, the primary issue of direct polling like this that seems top of mind to me: that no one I know wants to sit through a poll. Aren't these just polls of the segment that i

Yeah, but it still isnt the same -- because for the first investor, you still have to get them to agree to pony up the full 500k. When dealing with smaller angels, its easier to get your first 250k - 500k in 50k-100k increments. I do like

The benefit of convertible notes / SAFE's is that you get the invested cash IMMEDIATELY. This is a non-trivial benefit for most startups. When raising a full round of capital, say 1M, you don't get any of it until you 'c

It's kind of interesting to put HN in context of all the other services you use at least 1 time per week. I have a (relatively) old HN account -- 2287 days -- and now that I'm thinking about it, the only accounts/service that

I really like this post, but I think the success (or lack thereof) is really more about the competition than the product or the app market in general. There are tons of RSS apps that are good, with great ratings, and are free.

I'm surprised that sending the same message didn't get picked up by CL email-proxy spam filters. Maybe they found a room fast enough.

Obviously you know your customers better than I do, but I bet you could keep the free plan, 2x-3x your middle plan, and 5x your upper plan and still service the same number of customers. The delta from $20 to $50 isn't going to break a
