I'll bite (and I grew up in one of the colder parts of Canada, so I'd call 0F a cold but not unreasonable winter day). -30: Avoid going outside, if you do don't leave any exposed skin -20: A cold winter day: toque, scarf, mit

It strikes me that this ability to integrate arbitrary DSLs into a language in a typed fashion could be useful for a shell: if you aliased the built-ins to functions with parameters known to be globs, paths, filenames, regexes, etc. you mi

It's turned off by default in the preferences dialog (which is in the File menu for some reason...) Turning it on breaks some of the other notations (like the text-mode super/sub-scripts).

After further examination, a number of the features claimed on the website seem to be missing (at least on Windows). I don't get PDF export, math mode is not enabled by default (and enabling it breaks the super/subscript text-mode

I'm under the impression the authors are Korean; it's the only language besides English unattributed in the translations list, and the English localization has a few rough edges suggesting non-native speakers.

Math doesn't show up in the viewer, which kind of defeats the point of allowing math markup... otherwise promising. [I'm on Windows 8.1]

There are some good points here about there being a future in the job market for humans doing things that computers can't (the article defines "artisan" in terms of "personal flair"), but I think the Harvard prof be

I've worn a wristwatch since elementary school, and I'm noticing fewer and fewer people wearing them. As a second anecdotal data point, it's getting a lot harder to find replacement batteries and bands when they wear out - it

I've spent some time implementing my own multi-precision integer library, and I've used TAoCP as a reference for that, but not otherwise. From this (admittedly limited) data point, I'd say it's a useful reference if you&

This looks seriously cool. I need to spend a day or so really diving into the documentation, but if they can actually get this completely built and optimized it looks like it has the right features to be a systems language for the age of ma

Different people process information differently; for me seeing an abstract diagram of say, a B-Tree, would be more useful than a pseudo-code overview of the structure (at least first - the code might be useful once I had an grasp of the id

Fair; StackExchange might not be the best model. I'd say public reviews of papers, but not crowdsourced ratings of reviews - rank reviews by researcher reputation instead, weighting that reputation by reputation in a given subfield, an

I love the idea, but bootstrapping is the real tricky bit with a site like this. Putting aside the grant funding idea, I think you could really democratize academic publishing by adding a StackExchange-like rating system to something like A

Programming lectures without laptops work great (though it may help for the lecturer has a laptop and can show examples). If you want the students to follow along, that's what lab section is for (at least where I did undergrad, most

Do you have some concrete suggestions? I personally think that the place for high-tech solutions is for homework and maybe lab sections, not disrupting lectures.

Because a good lecturer will do more than just read off his or her slides, and if they tell students the slides will be available than many of them won't show up, and will miss out good material. Video-recording the lectures is another

I find your examples unconvincing. How many emails do you really get that are so urgent that they couldn't wait an hour? Why can't your babysitter text you (or, just IM on your smartphone)? Why are you the only person who can fix

One of the side points the author raised was interesting: namely, that there's a lack of good tooling for taking mathematical-notation heavy notes efficiently on laptop ... maybe some sort of Markdown with inline LaTeX (plain LaTeX is

Usually I love looking through new programming languages, but the docs here don't give me any motivation for the language, or even any reasonably non-trivial examples. Is it just supposed to be C++ with Lots of Irritating Silly Parens?

I don't know why you want another 10-15k, or what your current situation is (though it sounds like you're a programmer making okay money), so this might not be useful advice, but you can get a surprising amount of mileage out of a

Wouldn't the OP get the same result by staying in C# and changing the outer if-else to a switch? I'm not super familiar with C#, but many C++ and Java compilers do that. (Pattern matching is still a cool feature, as some of his l

Not a bad point, but if the OP had grown up in a country that used metric he'd have a similar mental model of the amounts. I picture pints, quarts & gallons in terms of their rough metric equivalents.
