Fair - but if you can get Google to pay for a bunch of engineers to build the standard library for you, I bet it would work better ;-)

And he didn't even mention the hassle of getting everyone to "Reply All" rather than just "Reply" to CCs.

That said, this is also a problem of his own creation - I keep a fairly lean Facebook friends list (which I'll purge of local contacts I'm not close to after I move next week), and fairly often unfriend people who I'm not close to and consi

I can definitely see his point about new social networks - probably the biggest win Google+ has given me was the ability to start my social network fresh, with only interesting people (also, mainly nerds, so I now post geeky stuff to Google

The London 2012 logo is better than the one they used, I think.

I'm not bashing Go here, just to clarify - I'm just saying that given Rob Pike's deep knowledge of the language and its libraries, and his heavy design input to it, it doesn't mean much that he's productive in it (well, besides the implied

Good advice - after I noticed that I solved most of my tough debugging problems on the walk home from work, I started going outside to take a walk around the building whenever I got stuck. Removing yourself from immediate access to the code

Agreed - we'd probably all be most productive working in a language we'd designed ourselves, irrespective of the merits or demerits of that language for other programmers.

Any idea when this is going to hit Dreamspark Premium (used to be MSDN Academic Alliance)?

Maybe this is really juvenile, but does the logo look like a bladder to anyone else?

If we're giving anecdotes, anyone I've known who's owned an Acer laptop (n=4) has replaced it with something else within a year or two, because it broke. (Personally, I've had good experiences with Asus; it's a pity the names sound so much

Exactly. Most of these examples seem to be "we've had Dropbox support for a while, and we added Google Drive and more people are setting it up"; my interpretation is "Dropbox users have already configured their accounts".

I've had a couple Asus laptops (not a Zenbook), and the multi-touch is pretty decent (well, once you dig into the settings and turn off pinch-zoom and all the fancy three-finger gestures). Still, Apple's multi-touch implementations are much

On another note, there's a very real possibility the Canadian government would be nationalistic enough to refuse Microsoft permission to buy them out, even if they offered. http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/06/29/andrew-coyne-...

I may be in danger of being labelled a Microsoft fanboy here, but I think Windows Phone is (or has potential to be) a good software platform, and Microsoft has got the money (and I think the will) to stick with it for a while - RIM would mo

A pity RIM rejected this - still, once their stock tanks further, Microsoft may just buy them out. Combined with a Nokia acquisition, they might be able to put together a strong mobile presence in both the consumer and enterprise sectors.

It accords with my (disappointing) impression from my undergrad AI class, that while these systems are certainly "artificial", the "intelligence" tends to lie completely with their designers.

I wonder if Apple is ever going to run into legal trouble for this - it can't be much different than Microsoft's troubles with bundling IE, WMP, etc. on the desktop.

I tend to agree about the lack of generics - the type of people who design and write standard libraries (e.g. Rob Pike and co.) may find it easy to put these things together, but they aren't representative of the general class of programmer

Does anyone else think that the DOJ would go after Microsoft for anti-competitive behaviour if it sunk $10B into selling hardware below cost to move into a new market?

I've got to say, for me, Facebook has largely replaced personal email (you never do know which of someone's three email addresses they actually use), but hiding your personal email in favour of their own system? That's just sleazy.
