Brent the author here. No, I did not expect the Surface to be as productive as a Windows laptop, but I did expect that Word would be able to keep up with me while I type - just as any other modern device is. I'm not asking to do 3D renderin

Brent the author here. I use Google's app-specific passwords and I've already disabled my Surface RT passwords when I boxed it back up this morning. I salute you though!

The size of guids isn't the only challenge. (The size is a little trickier than it looks, too - remember that the guid will be included in every index so the database can find its way back to the clustered index.) The other problem with gu

It actually comes from Itzik Ben Gan's presentation, "Bug or Feature." He covers an array of SQL Server behaviors and asks the audience to guess whether it's a bug or feature, and then explains the answer.

RENTING, hahaha, I never thought of myself that way. I like it. I'm going to use a "For Rent" sign around my neck in an upcoming blog post!

I consider DBA-level skills as the ability to read an execution plan, figure out what indexes are being used, know the difference between a good plan and a bad one, and figure out how to rewrite your query to get the performance & plan

You'll want to watch the video, because I explain that in more detail. Of course I'm not against change control or security, but if you want to scale a database, everybody involved has to have DBA-level skills. StackExchange's sysadmins a

Sadly, yes - obviously it's not this site's target audience, but a lot of PHBs out there are buying into it hook, line, and sinker.

Yep, absolutely, you nailed it. There's a gazillion presentations out there about tuning databases, but that only takes you so far. I wanted to show that you need to take a step back before you go into query tuning details.
