In my experience, if your tests require lots of mocks then that's a sign that IO is coupled too tightly to application logic. Refactoring your code so this isn't the case isn't always obvious, but it's a breath of fresh

Okay, I kind of want to question the "just throw it in Postgres," attitude I've seen throughout this thread. I've dealt with similar sizes (maybe 750GB, number of rows in the small billions) and as much as I adore Postgr

I've worked in startups for fifteen years and not once have I been in a situation with compulsory overtime. Maybe I'm just lucky? Maybe Boston area startups respect work/life balance more than most?

To add my anecdotes to the pile, my experience is that those going into software jobs as a backup plan make significantly less and do significantly different work. They generally just don't have the skill base nor experience to command

Who said anything about microservices on the local network stack? You don't need to do that to separate the layers; just have them be separate logical layers in your application. This is common enough that I almost think we're tal

It sounds like you're assuming the SSR is not well architected and then using that assumption to prove your point. It's pretty easy to have an API layer interal to your application -- have your view templates consume that API. N

I feel like this line of thinking is very analogous to the whole microservice craze -- you shouldn't need to introduce a network boundary to write well architected software. There's no reason you can't have a clear separation

"Reasonable" here means "roughly market rate". But salary survey sites always have such a wide range as to be useless. I mostly evaluate similarity in terms of responsibility (both tech-wise and human-wise), which yes, i

The radioisotope power plants? Very, very low. I think they output a few hundred watts of power. They're mostly used because they're very reliable and consistent over a long period of time.

I found the same thing. There are oddities in the non-async library too -- for example, rows are returned as a tuple without any column metadata, so you can't do a "select *" because you don't know the column order. I th

Just because the program is running doesn't mean it's using any appreciable amount of CPU. Most applications spend their time waiting for IO, and when you're not interacting with them, there isn't any.

Last I used Gitlab CI I remember being somewhat infuriated at the fact that I couldn't use the Gitlab docker repo as the source for my build images. That was about a year ago though so that might be old news.
