I recently passed the CCNA again and they really spend a lot more time on IPv6 compared to 15 years ago. It inspired me to go all in this time and configured my home network with a PD allocation from my ISP. I also came up with some fun l

Heh. When I was in high school, cell phones and pagers were banned based on the assumption that only drug dealers could afford them.

I was in Cub Scouts in the early 90s and got a Swiss Army knife. I thought it would be cool to show it off to the kids on the bus. It got confiscated by the principal and I was suspended for one day. I think I got off light. I can’t imag

As an ex-Mint user, Monarch has been a very useful and I feel I spend way less time monkeying around trying to recategorize transactions. I really like the budget rollover feature, it really helps smooth out things like yearly insurance re

At my first job in finance I worked at a trading firm that recruited people off the street to electronically click trade futures. They would ride the intraday market moves and constantly open/close positions. At the end of the day they

The Starbucks locations near me recently replaced their brewed coffee with on-demand coffee machines for each flavor, so I guess we are all destined to wait in the queue for coffee.

I loved the MBP’s from that era. That was my first (easy) upgrade as well in addition to more memory. Those 5400 RPM hard drives were horrible. Also another slick upgrade you could do back then is to swap out the super drive with a caddy

Sorry I confused prefix delegation with with having an allocation. I have multiple /64’s. It looks like with PD you can have up to 16 subnets, so equal to a /60.

If anything they will build a backup DC in Texas so they can hold that over NJ in case the local government starts talking about transaction taxes again. The CME is currently building a “backup” private Google Cloud datacenter in Dallas.

Huh? I have ATT fiber and have a /56. Edit: n/m I guess I confused PD with having a larger subnet. :(

When I am playing around in the cloud I am super paranoid about charges, so I end up locking the ACLs to only permit traffic to my home IP. It’s too bad that they don’t have a better built in way of making sandbox labs. When I was doing c

This appears to be a server emulator for the defunct MMO Need for Speed World. My guess is that need they need to spoof the TLS certs and install local host entries to get the original game client to work.

This is exactly how I use AI at work—-to quickly generate funny meme images/inside jokes for a quick chuckle. I’m no artist and probably will never be one. My digital art skills amount to drawing stick figures in MS Paint.

You used to be able to connect two PC’s together via the parallel port. I had to do this once to re-install Windows 95 on a laptop with a hard drive and floppy. It was painfully slow but it worked.

It depends on the firewall. For example, a Palo Alto can match by application and do SSL decryption in where the firewall acts as a MITM. A locked down environment would likely only allow SSL on TCP/443, and block UDP/443 to den

Not sure if I agree with it being the worst mistake. The beauty of UDP is its simplicity and you get the absolute minimum. (And that’s the way I like it!) I’ve worked on low latency financial networks that route 40+ Gb of UDP multicast da

You can definitely route multicast over the Internet via some kind of tunnel, be it stunnel, VPN, GRE. The ICE exchange uses stunnel for dev/certification multicast.

You don’t need a large network to participate to BGP. You just need a /24 (IPv4) or /48 (IPv6) allocation, AS number, and a business class Internet connection that can do BGP. Might be out of reach for most hobbyists but not imp
