I'm actually probably going to start asking new friends if, when they invite me over, if they have a ring doorbell. I'm getting fed up with being recorded without consent just because I want to go visit someone. Fuck that.

Discord is so cooked. It's Reddit all over again. And that place is utter trash now. Mods and Admins not even following their own rules, zero accountability.

It's as if all the other problems Facebook has done in the past never mattered. Nobody stops to think about how Facebook's _repeated and exhaustive history of abuse_ might actually impact them. If only there was some evidence of w

Missed opportunity in title to make it "..Even After Heated Heated Seat Debacle.." and it would have grammatically been correct. Oh well!

You can switch away from ribbon styles btw, if it's not your jam. IMO it's grown on me. As for my experience, collabora thus-far has been plenty responsive.

The problem with biometrics, as in biologically unique biometrics (fingerprints, blood, retina, etc) is that once it's in a database, you're fucked *for life*. It's unrealistic to destroy said records with absolute certainty

Consider the information can be used for more than just identifying you... if you have sufficient quality biometrics they can be used to _impersonate_ you, including "fingering" you for things you didn't do. Police forces hav

Airplane mode doesn't actually turn everything off, and it's not a guarantee like a faraday cage is. There are instances of devices still actually transmitting "stuff" in airplane mode, or having airplane mode silently d

The signals would be able to escape out the front of the screen, so a proper faraday cage effect would require full enclosure... since that's one of the core principles behind faraday cages.

I'm not trying to say you're wrong. I'm trying to say that it did not kill the "vibe" for me, so to say. For all I know they _wanted_ the second one to move, but it wasn't ready in time, and situations like tha

There are games that let you opt-out, hell even ones that ask you when you first open the game. There are bad apples, but there are plenty of good ones too.

Collecting analytics like this is effectively the same as play-testing physical board games in-development. People play a game, information is gathered, and the game is tuned in response to that. If zero information were ever gathered, game

At a price tag of $5/ea the cost of just advertising and distribution exceeds the cost of the product itself. There is zero room for profit. The business model is installing back doors to the "clients" and stealing money, inf

How is it not obvious to everyone reading HN that janky Android "TV" boxes (like the article references) are a by-default threat? Like seriously, many of them are sold for stupid cheap prices like $5/ea. Or advertise unlimite

Well the first thing to check is, do you own and operate any of these janky Android "TV" boxes sold by companies nobody has heard of? If yes? Then there's probably your answer.
