I really wish this article had explained how each method works. It's going to take me some time to analyze each method to see whether any of them are the method I was taught in elementary school. It extracts the square root to any desi

I worked for Datapoint from 1975 to 1977 as a technician in board test and repair. I started out working on power supplies, later moved to mod/demod boards (for the tape drives), then to processor boards. I only repaired a few of the o

A math major is for people who just love math. I think you would be happier as a CS major. You should take as much math as you reasonably can because much of it will help in CS.

An interesting project. I did see one error in his description of how a register works. What he describes is the operation of a latch. A register does not change outputs when the clock goes low. It only changes on the rising edge of the clo

I'm no expert on this and have not yet done it but from what I've seen people used to create a project on SourceForge until it fell into disfavor and now they are putting it on GitHub. I also have a project which I would like to o

ClipCache for Windows from http://www.xrayz.co.uk/ I have used this for so long it would make using a clipboard with only one page very difficult.

Yes. Any of those should be acceptable. Your meaning will be understood. The rules of grammar have been relaxed greatly from what they were 50 years ago, especially with grammar "correction" software which wants to change my "

If a company wants me to write code, they need to pay me for it. I came across a similar situation where a prospective employer sent me the requirements for a complex routine and gave me 7 days to return functioning and commented code. My e

I would give it a try with virtualbox if you have a version of Windows you can install in it. I would try Win7 or Win8.

Many years ago I read an article which concluded that people who went to school because they wanted to learn about computers were likely to fail. Those who went to school because they wanted to learn to use a computer to do something (make

I know what a monad is from Leibniz. I know what a monad is in APL. (APL is the second computer language I learned, following Fortran IV.) I know that "Monads come out of the sky and they stand there." from Yes. dictionary.com tel

Many thanks for that link. I wrote VHDL for 10 years and sometimes had to interface to Verilog modules. I only know enough Verilog to read it and get a rough idea of what it does, sometimes asking for help from an expert.

My first program was written in FORTRAN IV and it compiled and ran in the summer of 1967. After that, I learned APL, Z80 assembly, and BASIC. The August 1980 issue of BYTE magazine was all about FORTH. I read it cover to cover, then sent to

I disagree with this article. My first point of disagreement came when you had the government print $100 quadrillion and lock it away. You claim that the value of M in your equation changed. It did not. M is the money supply IN CIRCULATION.

When I looked at price and performance, a pair of 1070s cost only slightly more than a 1080 and gave me more RAM and cores. Even though the clock on a 1080 is 15% faster you can get more done with 50% more cores.

I agree with you. His Resulting Byte is incorrect in both partC and partD. Otherwise it was a good article.

I'd go with the Z80. Otherwise you might end up spending a lot of time figuring out how to do something that could be done with one or two Z80 instructions.

Machine learning deserves its own course. It should be in the 200 to 400 series. CS101 (Intro to Comp Sci) should cover the fundamentals of how computers work, Boolean algebra, how to program in at least one (imperative) programming languag

I had never heard of Memory-mapped Files before but I caught on right away that they're the inverse of a RAMDISK. With a RAMDISK you perform file access which actually goes to memory. With Memory-mapped Files you perform (virtual) memo

Please do not confuse stupidity with ignorance. Albert Einstein was ignorant when he was born. He did not know anything. He was smart and quickly learned much more than many people will ever know. My first computer program compiled and ran
