Yeah and poor access to Internet in metro areas is a thing here in Australia. There's plenty of people here (myself included) in the middle of the city with 5/0.5 connections.

I don't see it. Any old idiot can learn a programming language. The difficulty doesn't come from the language, it comes from the environment and tooling.

Not everything that gets added is stuff that people reasonably need, either. If you cater to everyone's needs, then you'll end up with 10 solutions for the same problem, because every one of your users has their preferred one. I t

I'm on board with this. There's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned call to action at the end of the article. Encourage subscription by producing good content, not by abusing your reader's time and attention.

I don't know if they bribe each other, but there's definitely a lot of people shilling garbage libraries because they have income streams dependent on it. Certain people here have alerts set up for certain topics so they can come

In Melbourne at least it seems like the system is run exactly at capacity. If one train has to stop at a platform for 3 minutes extra because of a signal fault or a sick passenger, every train on that line (and probably 2 other lines) for t

I'd definitely recommend the community balance patch. It completely overhauls a lot of the game's mechanics though, so it's a decent idea to play with just the official expansions for a bit to see how it changes the game.

That'd be an absolute dream. Never going to happen with the current political climate though. The Victorian government could barely get some level crossings removed without Murdoch and the Liberals shitting all over it. It's basic

This is the most important question I ask in every interview. The goal isn't to get someone to piss and moan about every little thing, it's to see if they can identify any downsides to the tech they use. IME >80% of candidates

Interesting. I've got the opposite problem. I can't even remember the last time I woke up in the middle of the night without an extremely loud alarm clock, and I feel like absolute death if I try and get up with less than 8-9 hour

Has anyone else noticed a small 'click' when scrubbing to a section of that video where data is being transferred. I'm assuming that's not co-incidental?

Same thing happens to me, if I have so much as a day or two without an alarm I just careen off into ridiculous sleeping patterns. I have to set alarms during the weekend just to keep on course. If I have a week or more off I start to run of

This only works if you can actually wake up with a low amount of sleep. I put one of those alarms on my phone where you have to solve maths problems to turn it off. All I've managed to do so far is train myself to do maths in my sleep.

I think the author still has a point when talking about "very" large applications. His example of all the Google widgets is a good one. Even if you were to hand-craft all of them with optimised code (which I imagine is what they d

This is exactly what I try not to do when hiring. I don't want someone that's built a bloody todo list in Angular, React and Vue. I want someone that's generated revenue by building quality software in one of them. I think

Context is a way to pass state down the component tree without it having to go through intermediate nodes. Say context doesn't exist, and you have a branch of components A -> B -> C, if C depends on some state in A, B would have

I think it's far more likely that if this process takes place, CS degrees will morph more towards areas like philosophy and mathematics than software engineering. I doubt they're going to be teaching the exact same way in 30 years
