Rebased fixes are easier to audit, so I can see an open source project preferring them. Otherwise, just freely merge to/from trunk. Prevent criss-cross merges though, those are a pain.

Yes, I'm very interested in this too. A bug like this could very well be an attack. It could also be an honest mistake, crypto is hard after all. I'm hoping someone will research this and provide a nice write-up.

Excellent article! The fact that they can reliably produce errors in most ram chips is worrying. They also provide a solution (probabilistic refresh of neighboring lines).
